well you have to ask, if they're going to become indistinguishable from commercial radio, why should they expect to continue receiving public subsidies?

I love Scottish music. Over the decades it’s brought me a lot of joy. Still does. The homogenisation of radio to pander to some weird media idea of who an average listener is in 2025 means losing access to younger bands and those at the fringes. The BBC should support grassroots music everywhere.

“Scrapping these freeform cultural spaces is not a tidy schedule change, it is pulling away a piece of the foundation of music in this country."

My piece in The Herald takes apart BBC leadership’s replies to MSP concerns about the axing of all four late-night music discovery shows on BBC Radio Scotland. If this stands, Scotland’s next wave of musicians will pay the price. Please read and share widely.

There are distinct mirroring elements to this story, to what happened at 6Music over a year ago (and was mostly pushed through). This really is a must read, and thanks must be given to @constantfollower.bsky.social for persisting in keeping the pressure up.

Update on BBC Radio Scotland cuts
They're feeling the public pressure

Roddy Hart has been given more air time, which is excellent!

But...

- His team are still axed
- 4 key shows still axed
- Music policy still passive listening
- Still little room for emerging artists
- Core problems unchanged

Unnecessary changes at BBC Radio Scotland. We don’t need yet another hits station. How are bands and the future of music supposed to swim in the ocean of noise that is the streaming platforms? Hpw do they stand out? What about the future of culture?
