In the weeks following record snowfall in Boston, several protected bike lanes have remained entirely impassable despite 311 requests and direct notifications. When protected lanes are not cleared, people are forced into traffic or prevented from traveling safely at all. This creates immediate and avoidable safety risks, particularly on Commonwealth Ave, where students and residents from Allston, Brighton, and Brookline commute daily, making it one of the highest bike traffic corridors in the city. To reduce the risk of injury, BCU is organizing a small, time-limited effort to clear snow and ice from one priority corridor while continuing to press the City for consistent, systemic maintenance. This action is intended not a substitute for the City’s responsibility to maintain public infrastructure, but as a reminder to them that this is desperately needed. We are inviting partners who are able to: Volunteer time to help shovel and clear the lane, and/or Assist with documenting the conditions and the work (photos or short videos) We will provide clear guidance on safety, messaging, and coordination so the effort remains focused, disciplined, and aligned with shared values around public safety and accountability. We will be meeting at 3pm at Babcock and Commonwealth Ave and start moving eastward. We will conclude our shoveling at 7pm.
