Stephen Lawhead's Pendragon Cycle (definitely first 3 books, last 2 more hit-and-miss).

My own _Heart_ (if you can find a copy), which has its faults but I'm still immensely proud of.

I do medieval reenactment, and combat training often produces minor bruising (and the occasional corker).

We are used to being asked by concerned professionals "is everything okay at home?", but "yes, I got stabbed with a spear" is far more interesting than shibari.
