A highlight of the parliamentary calendar is chairing UK Youth Parliament in the House of Commons Chamber.

Democracy is only as good as the next generation. It was a joy to see Members of Youth Parliament engaging and raising the issues that matter to them.

75 years ago this week, the rebuilt House of Commons Chamber was opened following its destruction during the Second World War.

Today I met with our second cohort of apprentices on the Speaker’s Apprenticeship Academy.

In total we’ve had 14 new apprentices join the scheme in the past year, all working to support the important work we do here in the House of Commons, the home of British democracy.

At the opening of the new Chamber in 1950, Prime Minister Clement Attlee commented that it was “surrounded by the tokens of affection which have been sent from all over the Commonwealth.”
