Bursting with flavors of cherry, stone fruit, and citrus—and a history going back to the 1890s. The rebirth of a Chicago classic! 21+
Cohasset Punch is sometimes wrongly attributed to renowned bartender Tom Bullock, as he republished the Goodman recipe in his 1917 book, “The Ideal Bartender” (Virtue uses Bullock’s recipes for their menu). I wrote an IG post about Bullock for his birthday: www.instagram.com/p/DP81zI6CQ9...

Yep, that version was published in 1901 (attributed to a Phil Goodman), not long after bottled Cohasset Punch debuted. I believe it was an attempt at a knockoff. It’s good in its own right, but misses the deep red color & cherry-forward flavor of the original. It’s also a branding nightmare for me!

It’s one in the same! Traditionally the liqueur was just served chilled over a peach slice as its own cocktail. There is a recipe floating around the internet with rum, vermouth, and lemon but those who remember it from the old days say the bottled liqueur is much closer to the original.

Malört is fine and dandy, but there’s one Chicago liqueur that was good enough for Papa Bear and that was Cohasset Punch!
From 1947-61, the Chicago Bears’ offices (plus a sporting goods store owned by “Papa Bear” George Halas) were a half-block west of Ladner Bros. “Home of Cohasset Punch” saloon. Coaches, staff, and players frequented the bar, and Cohasset Punch was reportedly a favorite tipple of Papa Bear himself.

In 1986, two months after the Bears won Super Bowl XX (ironically beating the New England Patriots, from the other side of Norfolk County from Cohasset, MA) the Home of Cohasset Punch was demolished. Now Cohasset Punch is back and the Bears are in the playoffs? Just sayin’.

Additional Fun Fact: Crane’s co-star in the play was none other than Barrymore family matriarch Georgie Drew Barrymore, mother to Lionel, Ethel, and John Barrymore, and great-grandmother and partial namesake to Drew Barrymore! (4/4)

The celebrated Cohasset Punch debuted at his estate a few years later, and now an image of “The Senator” appears on every bottle. (3/4)

The fictional Senator Hannibal Rivers became one of Crane’s best-known roles, and, when he purchased an 83-foot steam yacht to be docked near his Cohasset estate in 1892, he named it “The Senator.” (2/4)

Can the return of Cohasset Punch take credit for this season so far? Probably not, but it didn't hurt!

Pope Leo, replace the communion wine with Cohasset Punch! It has the same Chicago cred as—and makes more sense than—Malört.

I am touched, but unfortunately Cohasset Punch was a specialty of *Ladner’s* (slightly different spelling), an unrelated bar at Madison and Wells. Still, I think Cohasset ought to be featured at Miller’s Pub — I did drop off some samples and sell sheets a few months ago!
