A single stem of a wild aster with dry red-brown leaves clinging to the stem and a poof of seed heads- some bare and starry, some still dressed in light fluffy seeds, and the whole broad cluster carries a bit of powder snow on the centre top. The background is snow, the lower half in sun with slight granular blue shadows, the top in dark blue shade- accentuating the duality of Solstice: light and dark. The edges are blurred and a white vignette applied to emphasize the brightening that follows the Winter Solstice. A pale gold colour has been picked up from the seed heads and used for a thin border around the image, and lettering that says Happy Solstice in loose script font. Looking through an open woodland edge toward the sunset across an open pasture. We see a the trunks of a number of tall poplar trees, a couple of tall narow spruce with branches only up high, mostly out of sight, various small poplars and a couple of spruce and a bit denser growth off the right. We don't see the horizon clearly, but we can see a good part of the sky, which has areas of blue along with bands of cloud and some wispier bits- some of the cloud is blue-grey, but areas and the lighter higher bits catch pinky-golden light from the setting sun which is out of sight behind clouds on the horizon. Black vignette has been applied to the corners to emphasize the shadows of the approaching solstice.

A slightly zoomed view looking across the way into a pasture. It is snowing heavily and windy at the moment of the photo, and the zoom increases the effect. We see a very small shed with whitish walls and a snow covered peaked roof and is closely surrounded by a wire and post fence which has kept some tallish dry grass/weeds out of reach of summer cattle. A few metres farther out is another fence, with a couple of dark posts prominent in the mid-ground. Snowy ground (with a few bits of dry grass showing) and snow-filled sky are nearly indistinguishable. A slight film filter giving a faint violet hint has been applied, and edges are blurred and a white vignette effect used.

Head and shoulders view of an old white guy-me- standing outside in a snowstorm. My mouth is slightly upturned on one side- the closest I will get to a smile while I'm standing alone with a camera... I'm wearing a faded black hoody, hood up, and a faux wool hat with ear flaps underneath it. The coat is not fully zipped up and you can see another black sweater-like zipped .jacket and a bit of a light coloured shirt collar. Coat and hat are liberally dusted with small flakes of cold dry snow. The background is an overexposed view of spruce trees and bare poplars somewhat whited out by heavy falling snow. A slight filter has been applied giving a faint violet tint to clothing and background (not the face) and edges blurred and a white vignette applied. In yesterday's grouse photo post, I mentioned I started work on a hard to cut fallen tree. I shot some video also- some full format stuff that is not yet edited, and a short showing the tree, site and the grouse nearby. (more videos on Youtube and Spectra, I don't get them all loaded here)

Ruffed Grouse Bonasa umbellus A roughly chicken shaped bird, maybe half the size of a moderate sized chicken (less?). It is perched on a low bit of mossy stump no more than a couple of inches/handful of cm high. The bird faces away from us, but has turned its head halfway so we see its face in profile. It has a crest on the top of its head, but only slightly lifted. Its plumage is a vibrant and complexly patterned mix of dots and bands and splashes of reddish, greyish and dark browns, white and near/black. The background is a mostly shaded area below trees with faded fallen leaves and twigs in grey and brown. A bit of film filter has been applied to enhance constrast and add a faint violet atmospheric effect. The edges have been blurred and a white vignette applied.

Looking out the passenger side of the moving car. An area of cropped coarse clumpy golden grass in snow gives way to a smoother snowy field with an open patch of coarse dark low remnants of?- cropped thistle? then more smooth snow a fence of white horizontal boards on posts in front of a barn. The barn is strong red, rather freshly painted, with white trim and snowy roof. A largish spruce tree to the left partly obscures a whitish metal machine shed (or similar) behind, and we also see a round metal granary, tall metal fuel storage tanks, small red sheds and a line of bare poplars in the background. The sky is blue-grey cloud. A couple of film effects have been applied, giving a faint violet tone, also a warmer zone in the middle of the image, and the edges have been blurred and a white vignette applied.

Close view of a small plant on the forest floor (Maianthemum canadense Canada Mayflower). Several papery dry pinky gold spear tip shaped leaves clasp a single short stem. The leaves have many fine veins running lengthwise, giving them an almost pleated appearance. The stem is pale gold, tipped with a number of tiny spikes that would have held flowers in spring, which were not fertilised. The small handful that were pollinated have now produced shiny bright red juicy berries (which are edible- very sweet, but also bitter a fun nibble, probably wouldn't be a great idea to eat too many). The background is a blur of dried leaves, spruce cones and scales and one autumn gold leaf. A faint violet film effect has been used and edges are blurred with a white vignette applied.

Looking across a snowy pasture, only the foreground (except edge) is sharp, the farther away we move in the scene the more snow blurred it becomes, with sky and snowy ground similarly dusky white and the distant trees faded to light grey. The pasture is marked with clumps and patches and lines of dried grass, forbs and saplings that stick up through the snow, mid-way across is a sparse stand of bare poplars, no more than a dozen smallish trees. Farther back, more snow and dusk dimmed pasture and stands of wintry trees. A filter has been applied which increases contrast a bit, adding a faint tint of violet, and a blur and white vignette has been applied to edges.

Looking up at fluffy white clouds with some gaps of blue sky between. In the lower centre we see the top of large spruce tree intergrown with a poplar tree, winterbare and mostly silhouetted against the light sky. A grey-brown squirrel with a reddish hint on its back and reddish fluffy tail (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus American Red Squirrel) sits on a small bit of stump dusted with snow and littered with the spruce scales left from its meals of spruce seeds. On either side of its perch large tree trunks rise- a spruce to left and poplar to right. Behind the squirrel is out of focus forest floor, snow covered with saplings and bits of dry red-brown vegetation protruding. There's a faint violet tint applied and the edges are blurred with a black vignette applied to accentuate the shadows of the season even as snow and frost whiten everything.

Dusk lighting has been slightly enhanced with a faint violet tint. A single grass stem arcs gently from lower right to mid left, the seeds dangling and echoing the arc. Only hints of the dry grass show through, it is almost completely coated in short grainy frost crystals. The background is a blur of snow and more grass with some dark shadows. The edges have been blurred further and a black vignette effect applied to accentuate the setting sun.

A shaft of sunlight makes its way through the trees above and lights a violet plant on the forest floor. In the centre of the image is a single aymmetrical mostly white (barely pink tone) flower. There are two upper petals pointing to the upper left corner, one points out to each side, and a single larger one at the bottom angled to the lower right corner which has red-violet guidelines leading pollinators to the golden centre of the flower. The flower sits at the top of a stem above a couple of reduced elongated heart shaped leaves and a single large one points to the upper left. The background is shadowed foliage, with the edges darkened and blurred to enhance the already dark shadows, while the green -gold of leaves has been intensified emphasising the idea that the height of summer still holds darkness even while Sun is at peak.

Looking out the side window of the moving vehicle, across a snowy pasture with bits of dry grass showing through in places. Less than halfway across is a dark post and wire fence then another white stretch. On the other side we can just see another fence at the edge of a dense mixed wood of bare poplars and spruce. The trees are variably covered in frost (from ice fog) and snow with dark boughs showing through in places and some dark shadows between the trees, but the overall effect, especially the front trees, is of white trees. The sky is a soft blue and a white vignette effect has been applied to the edges of the image.

Looking up at several trees- an aspencomes from lower right and angles up into the centre with a pale trunk with black markings where branches emerge or once did; at the top it has a tangle of bare branches and fine twigs, outlined against the featureless whitish sky. To the right we see part of another poplar, smaller and dead with no fine twigs. Behind and to the left, not reaching as high as the aspen, we see the upper 2/3 of a large spruce tree, dark but frost lightened. I've applied some 'light leak' filters which have added random faint blobs and zones of colour, some reddish some blue-green-which kind of hint at holiday lights. The corners have a dark vignette effect applied.

Somewhat dusky light on a rather overcast late winter afternoon. Looking across a lightly snow-covered field, with strips and patches of low dry dull golden grass showing through, and farther back a plowed area, generally white with the nubbly texture of lumpy soil showing through a little. The field gradually rises (with some intervening slight ridges) to a high point that runs left to right across the centre. Just over the crest a large house- not too high but wide, sits facing us, dark red with white trim and a snowy roof. A couple of small, matching sheds sit off to the left, with a wire and post fence partly visible to the left of that. To the right of the house we see the tops of a row or patch of bare poplars, just over the hill. The sky above the hill and house is overcast but bright with just a hint of pre-sunset colour. Above a medium blue-grey more solid cloud mass feathers into the light below, the lighter and darker blending as if arcing strokes in a watercolour painting. The top and bottom of the image have a white vignette and blur applied, and a faintly violet filter across the centre.

A thin poplar stem- maybe the thickness of your little finger- comes into the frame from lower right. It's lit from behind and a bit blurry so we don't see a lot of detail, but it is roughly greyish with darker spots especially around leaf/stem scars and twigs and knobby joints. It angles toward the left, with several twigs going several directions. Just above centre, a dark twig arcs gently out to left, down slightly then up. Some bits of ice hang below the twig, including a large drop shaped bit in the middle with smaller bits to each side (almost bulls head shape!). This ice is lit from behind and glowing. The background is blurred with a few vague linear bands of dark and light and circles the camera lens has made of bits of light. A white vignette and blur has been applied to top and bottom of the image, and I've added a faint violet tint across the centre of the image.

A single stem of a rugosa rose stands in the falling snow with several dried twigs, a few dry brown-green leaves, and a single dangling dry flower, mostly closed in classic rose shape. Upper edges of twigs, leaves and the flower hold piles of snow crystals and scattered drops of melt water. The background is mostly shadowed trees blurred into a smooth green-grey mass with a few subtle vertical light bands. The falling snow has been turned to subtle circles of light by the camera lens, varying in size and brightness. I've slightly tinted them orangey, violet and pinkish. The edges/corners have a white vignette effect applied.

The end of a single thin poplar branch enters the frame from lower right. It's tip and a couple of small side twigs end in pointed buds which will bear next year's leaves. The branch is rather dark with a hint of red-brown at twig ends, and holds a bit of fresh snow in tiny piles of crystals here and there. A single leaf dangles in the centre, grey-brown with hints of reddish around the edges and darker blotches throughout, giving it an overall dark appearance. The weak mostly overcast light comes from behind. Background is blurred snowy ground and dry vegetation of red-brown-grey and snow white twigs, blurred to abstraction. The edges/corners of the image have a dark vignette effect applied to remind us of the darkness of the season.

We've had a little more snow + a few wintry days (-20C/-4Fish tonight, before warmer again this week). For no particular reason, I dug back to early October for some autumnal garden images. This is one of the rock gardens in front of the house. names in alt #autumn #Alberta 🌱📷 #gardening #alpines

From above left and between some of the stones in centre grows a small plant Paederota bonarota with thickish, somewhat cupped, more or less spatulate irregulary toothed leaves which are alternate opposite. The leaves are medium green though rather battered looking this late in the season, red rimmed and stained, fading to gold in places, especially the outermost/smallest leaves. From many of the branch tips dangle cat-tail like clusters of thready spent flowers/seed heads. To the right a nearly flat densely growing plant with tiny fuzzy 3 part leaves spills over the rocks. New leaves are a silver green, old leaves faded grey-brown or showing hints of dull autumn pinky gold. Both plants grown from seed from the Dolomites mountains. In front is a nearly flat densely growing plant with tiny fuzzy 3 part leaves Potentilla nitida, grown from seed from the Dolomites mountains. Between them is a Hen and Chicks plant -Jovibarba (Sempervivum ) with small tight rosettes of succulent leaves, showing green where they are open in the centre of larger rosettes, smaller bodies and outer leaves are deep red.

#Throwback to #fall on this increasingly white day! Non-native Cotoneaster, presumably #BirdSown on the farm. I know them from just a couple of spots (1 or 2 plants ea) and they are heavily browsed by moose, deer or cows or all 3 so they don't gain much size + #ladybug #Alberta #plants #insects 🌿🌱📷
1 On a sunny autumn afternoon in open woods. At the left is a thin erect woody stem, grey-brown and slightly shiny. From this emerge several twigs, finer and browner and holding a few remnant leaves at the tips. The leaves are elongated oval, slightly shiny with a leathery look, a few bites out here and there, and are a bronzey-reddish orange with hints of green-gold. Several partly blurred fine dry grey branches enter view from lower right and reach almost to the left side, curving gently toward the centre. From the left, just above centre, a darkish red-brown branch, larger but still slight, crosses the upper left corner of the image. From it dangle a handful of paper thin dry leaves. The narrow maple leaves are pale through dull golden brown, a bit deeper where they overlap and the faint sun from behind causes them to shade one another. The leaves are slightly wavy or recurved from the drying. The background is a blur of grey roughly vertical narrow trunks and mottled red-gold-brown leaf covered ground with a few hints of green. A mid-sized Sorbus/Rowan/Mountain Ash enters the view from the right, some of its leaves still clinging, dry, silhouetted against the dusky sky. A little farther back, straight ahead is a line of dark spruce and bare poplar, their intricate branches set against the sky with its slightly darkening lavender with ripples of light fluffy clouds, pale to coral from the unseen sunset. An open stand of woods- some mature poplars, along with saplings and taller still skinny trunks, as well as several spruce: small, mid-size and tall but sparse stands silhouetted against the sunset sky. We can see through to the horizon where a small bright pale gold patch marks the locastion of the sun behind clouds. Above that are bands of gold and blue-gry giving way to patches of darkening blue sky mixed with feathery pale gold to coral clouds.

A weathered grey barkless cut section of a hollow or partly hollow log, maybe a foot and a half tall sits upright on the ground. It is surrounded by other weathered wood, twigs, dried leaves etc. On top of the log section, in the hollow (I don't remember whether that hollow goes all the way through or not) we see a pile of reddish brown spruce cones, many with green needled branch tips attached still. The overall effect resembles some kind of winter holiday display, but actually this is part of a squirrel's winter food stash. Around the edges we see some cone scales left here the squirrel has already disassembled some cones to get to the seeds inside. The edges of the image are blurred and slightly white vignetted to add to the feeling of a holiday image.
