The seabed rarely consists solely of bare sand: often other materials, such as shells are present. Kooistra et al., show shells have marked effects on bed roughness and sand transport 🐚 🌊

She tells [us about] seashells [and how they affect sediment transport] on the seashore! 🐚🌊⛏️

Congratulations to @tjkooistra.bsky.social on her latest PhD paper in @jgroceans.bsky.social !

How Shells of Different Shapes Affect Current‐Driven Sand Transport
Sandy seabeds with shells require higher depth-averaged flows for initiation of motion of the sand than a bare sandy seabed Both round and elongated shells decrease bedload transport of sand up t...

You’ve heard that beavers are “nature’s engineers.” But Cretaceous dinosaurs might have engineered their ecosystems, too.
Move Over, Beavers. Dinosaurs Might Also Have Been Nature’s Engineers - Eos
Late Cretaceous dinosaurs may have cut back vegetation, creating large floodplains. When the asteroid hit, those floodplains became forests, a new study argues.

Is your reservoir full of sediment? Patricia Buffon has a solution for you! Take a look at her awesome new paper, which uses lab experiments to investigate scour and sediment transport by jets: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...
Evolution of Erosion and Deposition Induced by an Impinging Jet to Manage Sediment
Direct and indirect transport modes for suspended sediment from the scour hole were identified and quantified Self-similarity of longitudinal bed profiles is demonstrated for the erosion and depo...

Check out Tjitske Kooistra's first PhD paper!
My first PhD chapter got published! 🎉

We investigated sediment preference of Wadden Sea benthos, and identified areas which are sensitive to sediment change, or "sandification". Curious to know more? You can read our (open access) paper here: doi.org/10.1016/j.ec....

We had lots of fun recording for our project TRAILS at Wageningen University (and on a “real” mudflat!), with my lovely project colleagues Anna-Maartje de Boer, Natascia Pannozzo and @coastallycurious.bsky.social

Last week, I showed our research on sediment mixing by benthic animals at the Dutch Earth Sciences conference (NWO-NAC). I had interesting chats with geologists, learned a lot (amongst others about dinosaurs and plate tectonics😂) and won the second price with my poster!

Where does my sandcastle go when it washes away? In my favourite paper we see coasts as a connected network of sandy pathways. This approach helps us better understand and manage the sand that builds ecosystems and protects us against flooding! agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

Hello to all the new folks on Bluesky! My name is Stuart and I'm a beach nerd! As a coastal engineer I try to keep people safe from coastal flooding using sand. Here is a silly little video explaining my research using only the 1000 most common words: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdJF...
