An initial report to BC's invasive species hotline made it's way to inspectors with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency who determined that the insect was indeed EAB. In this paper we document the follow-up survey that confirmed a resident, reproducing population. 4/6

Today's field work fail. I have used this device for many, many years to sample trees (pole-mounted arborist's pruning head). But do you think I know how to rethread the cord when it breaks? Nope. Had ask my lab tech to send me a photo of her's so I could fix mine because I could not figure it out!

8/ So why do we care so much? Well hemlock is an important climax species in eastern Canada. It provides habitat for lots of other species and is an indicator of old-growth communities. The adelgid has the potential to kill a lot of these trees. To protect hemlock we first need to know where it is.
March 13, 2025 at 1:32 PM
7/ In the east, the adelgid has invaded most of southern Nova Scotia and Ontario's Niagara peninsula, along with 1 population on the north shore of lake Ontario.
March 13, 2025 at 1:32 PM
6/ In the west the adelgid is mostly found on the coast attacking western hemlock, but there are some records in the interior as well.
