A nation of laws. A nation where all men are equal, regardless of race, religion or creed. A nation where those free men are guaranteed life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. No kings. From our founders, to our heros in arms, to all the civil rights leaders here at home, we are a nation unbent. Defiance is in our blood. We chased out a monarchy, broke the cruel practice of slavery, defended the free world in its darkest hours, and we marched. We marched to give women equal rights in their country. We marched to give black men and black women equal rights in their country. We marched to give gays the right to get married and love openly and peacefully in their country. And one by one, struggle by struggle, these true patriots - most of who history will never remember - pushed this nation closer to its founding values. We are a beautiful project. A project built on rejecting the the dark impulses that wish to subdo men and rob them of life and liberty. Our history is beautiful, messy, contradictory. Our project is never complete. The work to push our country closer to its true values continues. I'm proud of that work. I'm proud each and every day to be an American.

Cherish the history and romance as a sacred heritage, for your children and their children's children.
