As the Managing Lawyer, Julia drove strategic litigation, public advocacy, community legal education as well as law reform to advance the human rights of environmental and climate defenders throughout Australia.

We help defenders who are facing threats and intimidation because of their activism from governments, businesses or individuals. Lawyers sometimes call these SLAPP (Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation) cases.

We help defenders who are facing threats and intimidation because of their activism from governments, businesses or individuals. Lawyers sometimes call these SLAPP (Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation) cases.
We also assist non-violent climate and environmental defenders who want to hold governments and police accountable for their actions by using courts and other mechanisms like complaints to regulators and authorities.

Since then, CDA has become its own independent community legal service, to offer legal information, advice and support to non-violent environmental and climate defenders when they need it most.

While housed at the EDO, the program achieved extraordinary outcomes, from providing representation to over 350 individuals and groups to successfully challenging oppressive bail conditions in 98 separate cases

CDA evolved from a dedicated Program first established by the Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) over 15 years ago to uphold the democratic rights of environmental defenders.
