For years now, the Endangered Species Act has had a simple safety net: threatened species automatically get basic protections from harm, killing, trapping, or trade. This blanket rule has helped ensure that vulnerable species get protection immediately.

But of course that’s all about to change ⤵️🧵

Catastrophic floods and landslides have killed over 1,000 people across Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Thailand with hundreds more missing. Bridges washed out, neighborhoods underwater, families displaced 💔

As extreme weather grows more intense, we need action that matches the scale of the crisis.

For years, CBS News was one of the strongest forces in climate journalism. The network not only led in overall volume of coverage for four years in a row, it was also responsible for almost half of all climate coverage across major networks in 2024. ⤵️

🚨🚨The administration is proposing to remove the automatic protections that kick in when a species is classified as “threatened.” Instead of immediate safeguards, each species would need separate review—a process that could drag out, leaving vulnerable species at risk. ⤵️

It’s wild that advocating for the planet and people is still considered radical.

Our coasts are our first line of defense against rising seas, stronger storms, erosion, and climate change. They protect our coastal communities, ecosystems, and economies.

But as storms intensify and flooding worsens, it’s now our turn to protect the protectors 🌊 ⬇️

“All of our small island developing states know all too well the fear and dread those in the hurricane’s path are feeling. This trauma should not be anyone’s norm...“

There’s a bill in Congress right now — it’s called the Endangered Species Transparency and Reasonableness Act.

Except… it really isn’t. ⤵️

👏🏼👏🏼 South Korea just passed a national law requiring all large parking lots (those with more than 80 spaces) to install solar canopies!

That means every supermarket, office, and mall lot could soon double as a clean energy hub, feeding power into the grid and making smarter use of space! 🌞

Air pollution is one of the greatest threats to human health, responsible for more than 6 million deaths worldwide each year, linked to respiratory illness, heart disease, cancer, childhood asthma, and more ⤵️

Fueled by warming oceans, #HurricaneMelissa is slow-moving, relentless, and tearing through homes, hospitals, and schools, putting millions at risk.

Melissa is climate change and inaction hitting us at 185 miles per hour. Not far off in the future, but right here, right now.

Passed in 1972, the Marine Mammal Protection Act has been a lifeline for whales, dolphins, manatees, sea otters, and so many others.

It’s one of the reasons no marine mammal species has gone extinct in U.S. waters in over 50 years.

But right now, this landmark law is under threat ⤵️

The massive storm in Alaska destroyed homes, displaced thousands, and led to one of the largest evacuations in the state's history. This isn’t just extreme weather, it’s the cost of inaction.

Taking steps to protect people and prevent the climate crisis from deepening shouldn’t require convincing.
