That said, Chu, it could be wonderful. 😉 There's so much to love about it. Despite my disagreement with the direction you took, you have something to be very proud of. Thank you for telling the story I love, even if it's a different way of looking at things. I'm proud this came out in my lifetime.

Those comfort films I need when I'm crying in bed, in my stinky pajamas, eating ice cream and hiding from the world. These two movies will bring me comfort and joy at seeing these characters I love come to life in the same room with me. Beautiful sets, costuming, phenomenal talent, it's beautiful.

I have criticisms, sure. But I also fully intend to own this movie and have it be one of my comfort movies.

We also must consider with theatre productions of musicals the first act is 90 minutes, the second is 60 minutes, roughly. Both movies were over 2 hours EACH. Expect there to be new scenes, new dialogue, new music. Be glad at least Stephen Schwartz had his fingers in it. Manage your expectations.

The movie was still good. I cried, of course. I've seen Wicked live in theatre performances. I would only caution people to manage your expectations of the tone of the movie. It goes in an unexpected darker direction than you may be anticipating, and that may mess with you and what you already know.

By comparison, she was directed to be more calm and composed than what the story Chu envisioned had demanded by that point.

We sat through depictions of segregation, slavery, imprisonment, underground yellow brick railroad of refugee animals, then we're supposed to be ok with Elphie & Glinda singing Wonderful with the Wizard? Hmm, no. With all that, Elphie should've been full of rage & shattered mind for No Good Deed.
November 22, 2025 at 4:40 AM
Then Elphie has that moment of clarity after the dance, starts coming out of it, eventually figures out she & Glinda have been drugged, and then she discovers all the rest. It would make her rage even more intense. For all the darkness you gave us, then go harder. Otherwise, tone it down.
November 22, 2025 at 4:40 AM
The plumbing to her place could be tainted, make Glinda more pliable to be the amenable spokesperson despite the corruption she can clearly see. Glinda offers Elphie water when she's over to visit while they're talking, so by the time they both get to the Wizard their convictions have melted a bit.

I'm just saying, the Elphaba you gave us at the start of For Good would NOT have sung and danced with him, not in her right mind. We already know he likes to drink and get girls drunk. It would have made more sense for him to have slipped something in the water. Maybe at Glinda's, unknown to her.
November 22, 2025 at 4:40 AM
If we start stepping into the darkness and change the tone, then you have to commit and adjust the rest of what follows to fit. If we're to believe Elphaba's gonna be seduced by the Wizard's promises, after all she's seen, then he should have somehow drugged her & Glinda to cloud their judgement.

The darkness in the movie pulled in the stark, disturbing realism from the book, but in contrast the Broadway musical sanded down the book's sharp edges and made it palatable for a larger general audience. The Broadway musical worked because it was watered down. Chu, we now need aftercare. 😉
