Former scientist, public involvement professional, transforming a failed farm into wildlife habitat and a food forest. Every day is an adventure, bruises and a few scars expected along the way.
Bone-chilling fog rolling in as coyotes tip and howl across the valley. There is a glimpse of moon, but we will lose it to clouds soon.

And while these are fuzzy photos of a faraway #bird, they are good enough to show a barn owl hunting at the East 90 during the day, something I’ve never seen there.

Northern shrike from Samish Flats East 90 location Yesterday. Elegant little butcherbird hunting insects far from thorny, impaling vegetation. 🪶

Pretty sunset on Samish Flats. Only one short-eared owl in the distance, but I saw some surprising birds flying the East 90: northern shrike, rough-legged hawk (they usually avoid the eagles, but not today), and a barn owl (!). Will process photos tomorrow. Light was low with incoming weather, so 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Well, that was fast. Three more to go. #AdoptDontShop

@seattlehumane.bsky.social isn’t posting much here, but look at these adorable puppies they posted on Insta. Someone needs to adopt the kid in the back with wearing droopy spotted ears like a hat.

Dug is finally back to normal behavior this morning, following sniff trails and playing with sticks along the way. Culture was negative but I read that can happen in 20% of cases in male dogs. Or it’s something else going on. Ultrasound scheduled for the 8th. 🤞

I guess that’s when alt text really matters: the photo is slightly too large and doesn’t load. 🤪

A friend invited me to what I thought was Thanksgiving brunch when I looked at the website. They thought they had arranged for dinner. And they had even confirmed by phone they could get the prix fixe dinner at brunch. Along with a bunch of other people who showed up in dinner dress. 👀 1/2

From our morning dog walk. The red box and light at the right is the Olympic Pipeline safety valve. Crews were on site all day. I hope BP feeds them Thanksgiving dinner.

Thanksgiving Day dog walk before brunch with friends. I see that my neighbor the seal is dining early. #PacificNorthwest

2/2 Case in point.

I got the relief vet yesterday who agreed a more aggressive approach to Dug’s recurring UTIs is needed. He’s on antibiotic that should penetrate even prostate, getting a culture and tick panel, and scheduled for an ultrasound. Yeah, $$$$, but so is hauling a sick dog into the vet every few weeks.🤞

1557 of us awake when we probably shouldn’t be, watching Island building in real time. I wonder what our early human ancestors would think of us.

3/ They recommend fluroquinolones as bactericidal to avoid drug resistance. My vet prescribed amoxicillin, and we saw resistance after the first run.

I’m not willing to watch Dug suffer like this, so I’m going to be That Owner. I’ll share this info and ask for more aggressive approach to this. 🤨

Learned something about the planet tonight. On this note, I visited the Kiluea livestream and she’s got waterfalls of lava going.

AI still mashes up body parts. So yeah, the shoes, but look where the fingers point. Some odd stuff going on there.

I also saw several kestrels hunting as the sun set behind dark clouds. Gloomy day, but nice to see anything. I hope our winter visitors are finding enough food as one storm after another swings through.

I had to run up north for truck stuff. skies were dark and mist washed in the distance, and light was poor. But I did catch some trusty herons hunting as they do, rain or shine.

Despite heavy frowning clouds, the sun swept the valley with color this morning.

Of a few dozen trumpeter swans overhead, I caught only these. Hard to grab video with two dogs in hand.

I hear a tundra swan in there, and have heard them over the valley. They’re not usual here.
