It's our Trans Day of Remembrance showcase with @poeticunderground.bsky.social

This showcase is close to my heart. I feel like it's a love song of resistance for my community...but I also feel a deep sense of sadness--the emptiness due to those we lost.

Maybe tonights poetry will help with that.

CW: guns, death, art dealing with today's events

I wrote a poem today in honor of the students and teachers who have lost their lives to gun violence.

As an educator...every time this happens, it hits close to home, and today the grief overtook me

At work? Did you find out about the shooting from the news? Or from one of my fellow teachers? Or a social media post from a panicked parent? * At the end of every lesson plan I was given I always read the dismissal procedures And bus routes And walker list Making sure all my students made it where they needed to go safely I'm sorry I failed today If there are children with me, now I can promise you, I walked them home for the last time Like I used to walk them across the street Or tuck them safely back into their grownup's cars * 3/4 So now, I ask... Read this at the protest Because I don't want a funeral I don't want a celebration of life I want these streets filled With marchers and activists and resisters Who do not know right now That they are the future They HAVE to be the future now You don't understand Guns are the number one killer of children We are losing a generation and elders to bullets * And please don't raise your hand and ask "So how do we fix this?" I can't answer now Even though every part of me wishes I could... This was my job after all 4/4 And even then, I don't think I have the answer All I have now, are these words Because everything else Every other part of me Was left on a classroom floor But let me leave you with a final word problem When our politicians argue about gun legislation On the House and Senate floor I wonder which percent sees our bodies Our ghosts And who sees money from the gun lobbyists Who sell their bullets and buy our lives
