My employer, Univ. Colorado will pay OpenAI $2M/year under the banner of “equity”. That’s 54 full scholarships / year. Plus, our IT will be able to read our chatGPT logs, and our chats can be requested under public records law. No thanks. Surveillance is not equity

You guys, The Everlasting by @alixeharrow.bsky.social is one of the best books I have read in recent years.

I'm gonna call it now and say that it's probably gonna win the Hugo for best novel.

Yesterday I had a great recorded convo with Cindy Cohn of @eff.org about privacy rights then and now. She gave me the sad news that Dave Farber recently passed away. I read about the ATT case from his iconic Interesting People list and reached out to EFF to say WTF and then: Jewel vs. NSA. 1/2

Valentine's Day greetings from NorCal! It's overcast and 7C/45F. When I was getting the paper out of the box, something hissed at me from several feet behind me. Cat? Bobcat? Lynx? Too dark to see. The main point is it only hissed. I have strong coffee. All pets snoozing. Have a hearty day!

Greetings from NorCal. It's 6C/43F. Can now see it is foggy in the mid-distance. Owls were hooting and frogs were singing on my way to get the paper. Charlotte and Jane are snoozing under the covers. Devil Cat, Elderly Cat, and Visiting Cat spent last night in my room. Have a fabulous day!

Good morning from NorCal. It's dark, dampish, and 6C/44F. When I went to get the paper, I saw a crescent moon and stars peeking from between the clouds. Frogs are singing loudly. All pets are snoozing. I have delicious tea. Have a terrific day.

When I took the dogs out for their afternoon not-really-a-walk, it was raining and I was calling them from the side of the house and not even best girl Jane was coming. When I checked, it was because Devil Cat and Visiting Cat were blocking the way and no dog dared attempt to pass.

I’ve watched a lot of congressional hearings over the last 40 years. This performance by Bondi is the single most unprofessional, non-responsive, reprehensible and obnoxious I have ever seen from any witness who has testified before any committee of either chamber.

Good morning from NorCal. It's dark, damp, and 11C/52F. The frogs were singing this morning. Charlotte and Jane are under the covers. Elderly Cat is loudly meowing, Visiting Cat is visiting, Devil Cat is up to no good. Lord Byron is explaining the great sausage crisis of '26. Have a great day!

Good morning from NorCal. Monday is behind us. It's dark and 6C/43F with rain in the forecast. Stars sparkle between gaps in the clouds. It was quiet when I went to get the paper, but last night the frogs were singing in the frog pond outside my room. All pets snoozing. I have purple Oolong tea.

Good morning from NorCal on this Gateway to Not Monday. It's dark and 7C/44F. Wispy clouds covered the moon but stars sparkled above. Charlotte and Jane are snoozing under the covers. Visiting Cat spent the night. It was quiet when I got the paper. May everyone who isn't a fascist have a great day.

Good morning from NorCal. Current temp is 9C/48F same as it was when I went to get the paper earlier. It's very foggy at the house. All pets currently snoozing. The Blue Jays do not immediately swoop in for their treats when it's too wet. Given this, I think it rained last night. Have a super day!

Took the dogs outside for their afternoon not-really-a-walk and they had a good time. Once they were inside again, I walked for 30 minutes, very slowly because of the boot, but it was 30 whole minutes! It's such a relief to be cleared to walk more.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

The Wapo situation is not Bezos failing or being a dullard. It's Bezos falling in lock step with Peter Thiel. This is deliberate. Their plan is to convert all media into Fox News and worse and destroy media that does not comply.
