2,901 cattle left Uruguay on 20 September. Approx half were pregnant, & all were crammed onto the Spiridon II, a ship heading to Turkey.

That moment, & the following events, are nothing short of a tragedy.

Two months of horrendous suffering at sea.

For as long as live exports continue, we will see more tragedies like this. Britain has banned this horrific and outdated trade - it's time for other countries to follow.

The Spiridon II: timeline of suffering. 20 Sep: the Spiridon II leaves Uruguay with 2,901 cattle on board, approx half are pregnant. 22 Oct: The Spiridon II arrives at the port of Bandirma, Turkey. 23 Oct: Turkey refuses to unload the animals due to issues with documentation. 9 Oct: Permission is given to restock supplies in Turkey, but not to unload the animals. 14 Nov: The Spiridon II leaves Turkey, but the animals are still onboard. 22 Nov: The Spiridon II docks at the port of Benghazi, Libya, the animals are later unloaded after 2 months of suffering.

The Spiridon II has left Libya & @awf-germany.bsky.social reports that at least some cows have been unloaded. We will update you as we learn more.

We are calling on the World Organisation for Animal Health to ensure the animals get urgent veterinary treatment.

Today, Co-op announced that it will meet its 100% cage-free commitment across its continental meat range by the end of the year - removing the use of sow stalls & farrowing crates. 👏

In 2018, Co-op banned cages for its fresh pork & now they've extended this.
Progress: Co-op will meet its cage-free commitment by the end of the year.

After a gruelling sea journey from Uruguay, over 2,900 cows had been stranded at sea near Türkiye after being refused entry to Bandirma Port due to administrative issues.

Now they are set to endure another month at sea to return to Uruguay.
