liturgical objects from Toledo Cathedral such as the 10th century Mozarabic Liber Misticus. Why Tallinn? Tallinn-born Michel Sittow’s (1469–1525) earliest works were painted for the Luna Chapel of Toledo Cathedral whilst his final works are at Niguliste! Overall, an impressive exhibition 5/5

Then I ran over to St Nicholas Church (Niguliste) for the grand opening of “Dives Toletana: Treasures of Toledo Cathedral from Medieval to El Greco” celebrating 800 years of Toledo Cathedral & showcasing the paintings of #ElGreco for the first time in Estonia. This rare exhibition includes 4/

The second exhibition at Tallinn City Life Museum, “Lyndanise. Reval. Tallinn. City Life Through the Centuries” was even more focused on material culture & how it has changed through Tallinn’s history. Not massive but a lot of small artefacts to discover so just a few sneak peeks as a teaser 3/

Brotherhood of the Blackheads, an association for unmarried merchants (still active), which was first mentioned in Tallinn in 1400. The Brotherhood is named after St Maurice, a Black soldier saint who died in the 3rd century A.D. Video: deer leg beakers the brotherhood is known for (read ALT) 2/

now I can’t wait for our department to finally move to the new building (yes, more news!) so we can unpack the finds & I can get back to this topic sometime in 2026 3/3

the results about glass beads are particularly interesting. Not only because glass is my specialty but because the topic has a lot of potential. Unlike glass vessels & other glass objects, beads are quite poorly studied in Estonia, particularly early beads. I did sneak a peek for my PhD but 2/3

Oh - coming to Estonia for a research trip? I think the first Sarve finds are already back in Hiiumaa (not sure, the Heritage Board has been in charge of them since the discovery)
November 22, 2025 at 7:32 AM
Although the Sarve coins are notable in the local context, Sindi-Lodja’s Stone Age settlement & the discovery of potentially the oldest house in Estonia has nationwide & regional impact. So I was really happy my colleagues got the award for Find of the Year! Congratulations, @silviakask.bsky.social!

I visited the site of the 2nd ship as an UG student but didn’t grasp HOW sensational the site really was & how lucky I was to see it in situ. New studies are constantly being conducted - from the four brothers to the dogs to the iron, the site keeps on illuminating & rewriting our past 4/4

Eric Östergren described the process of setting up the Vikings Before Vikings exhibition at #Vrakmuseum in Stockholm and its impact for the museum. His enthusiasm for the exhibition & the energy the Vrakmuseum puts in to deliver the ideal visitor experience was quite remarkable, inspiring really 3/4

Marge Konsa introduced results of the #excavation which started 17 years ago. Despite its discovery nearly two decades ago, new analyses are constantly changing our perception of the #Vendel period (Pre-Viking Age) in the region. TIL one of the swords was encrusted with Sri Lankan garnets! 2/4
