Heritage photographer. Trying to become an archaeologist. Bit of a thing for landscapes, archaeology, movies, music, history, and chocolate. Derbyshire-based.
Not had much time to get stuck in to the landscape archaeology books I amassed over the summer, but finally got around to this little beauty! Reading these books, I get such a sense of finding my people! 😊

There's a plain slab similar to that inside Tideswell church. The story goes that a chap was spotted next to the slab, and when questioned, he said he was researching his family tree, and an ancestor had requested to be buried here under a simple slab. Before then, nobody had a clue about it.

Back at the tin tabernacle in King's Clipstone for some more archaeological learning! This time a 3-day course on GIS.

As usual, lots of fun to be had with @mercianarch.bsky.social

Whilst I'm not the biggest fan of audiobooks, I'm even less of a fan of the whole "Eurgh, audiobooks aren't real books." gang. #booksky 📚

Had a fab time seeing @profaliceroberts.bsky.social at De Montfort Hall, Leicester last night. Funny, interesting, and a bit more archaeology than I was expecting 😁 Also, I just love listening to people talk so passionately about #history and #archaeology. Wish I could do it every night!

Just finished this. A cracking read for anyone who loves trying to unpick the history of any old buildings they happen upon.

There's something quite beautiful about Sir Mortimer Wheeler's box-system excavations at Maiden Castle. Such a fantastic photograph!

How the old OS maps shortened 'Methodist Chapel' always makes me chuckle.

Had a brilliant day at the CBA-East Midlands fieldwalking conference in Grantham. My head is chokka with information & ideas to take forward into efforts to get our county archaeological society doing fieldwork again. A really inspiring event! #archaeology #fieldwalking

Popped along to Wollaton Park yesterday to see what Laura from @yorkarchaeology.bsky.social and her merry band of Nottingham Uni archaeology students were upto. Somehow I managed to time my visit with the traditional 'Posh Lunch' day to celebrate the end of the dig! Hurrah! #archaeology

My incredibly talented sister (@gemseddon.bsky.social) shared this incredibly brilliant letter by Kurt Vonnegut. Important things for us all to practice, remember, and to share with others!

Following on from last week's "It's not a hillfort but should be" post for #HillfortsWednesday, here's another tenuous one, where I just managed to squeeze Fosbury Camp hillfort in #Wiltshire into this photo from a recent wedding. #archaeology

Sidestepping into #HillfortsWednesday with a 'not a hillfort but it should've been'. Coppy Hill, near Ticknall in #Derbyshire. What were those silly Iron Age folks doing ignoring this hill, which is ripe for a spot of hillfortery! Quite tempted to start my own. #archaeology

Missed the bloody bit of tonight's blood moon, but it still looks a bit special. Also a good test of the zoom on my new phone camera!

Another reminder that Summer is coming to a close; the last of the Derbyshire Archaeological Society's Summer events. A tour of Derby Cathedral. Whilst we didn't get to see some of the juicy stuff in the depths of the building, it was great to hear some of its stories through history!

I love an early showing at the cinema. 10:30am! Out in time for lunch. Perfect. Made even better by watching the 50th anniversary edition of Jaws! It's funny how quickly I forget how brilliant it is in between viewings!

I'd agree with all of that. Any ideas what it might be? It's visible on LiDAR too.

These parchmarks on Chaddesden Park in Derby have been suggested to be the original Chaddesden Hall (a Moated Medieval Manor House) before the later hall was built (further north in the park). But I don't get moaty vibes, having looked at other Derby MMMH sites. Any ideas? #archaeology

Had a great morning in the Staffordshire landscape, being given a tour by Ian of @enricharch.bsky.social of the long-term Tudor farming project he's been involved with. I was so engrossed in hearing about the various lumps & bumps, I only took one photo!!

A nice drive along some historic routes to yesterday's wedding. Ryknield Road followed by a spot of Watling Street.

Which was nice.
