Social studies teachers: How are you teaching about the current economy? Here is a recent jobs growth chart (data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics; chart credit Steven Rattner). Important that we help students think about the data rather than the partisan rhetoric. #sschat #edusky

We are planning to make @socialstudies.org conference this year about teaching against fascism and for justice and democracy, right? I'm ready. Are you?

There is an irony in Trump's Department of Education de-classifying education as a professional degree. This will hurt educators (increase student loan debt) and exacerbate the teacher shortage. www.newsweek.com/full-list-de...

In teacher preparation courses, we ask beginning teachers to create lesson plans. Of course, this level of lesson planning depth is not done in the classroom, but it is to learn what makes a good lesson plan. So, I asked AI to do it and described two different contexts. The results were concerning.🧵

And a point of disagreement with the Times here. Ethnic studies is not an "activist discipline" (that is not a thing), but an academic discipline like any other. Many universities in the U.S. and elsewhere have Black studies, Asian American studies, Native studies, or Latino studies departments.

We need to think deeply about... Digital devices. Student well-being. More engaging, challenging, and relevant curriculum and instruction (not just expectations). And yes, better funding (we will see more problems arise as COVID related ESSER funds have ended-were a lifesaver for many schools).

And actually doing more of the same. Pretending like we don't know what "A Nation at Risk" did. Then demanding we do a lot more of what it recommended is not a serious solution. Instead, we must ackolwedge our education problems are mutlifaceted and will need to be solved be tending to many issues.
October 21, 2025 at 2:48 PM
And then the pièce de résistance! He says there is this thing called "A Nation at Risk" that maybe no one has ever heard of and we should listen to it (not that it has driven almost all ed reform since!). Oh, and China is beating us. Someone clearly talked to an economist. That's it. That's the end.

This recent article in The Atlantic is wild. It proclaims that there are "declining standards and low expectations" destroying American education. I'm not going to link it here, because I don't want to promote something completely unsupported by any evidence. A breakdown of its absurdity. 🧵

Proudly cast my mayoral ballot for Michelle Wu and Mejia, Louijeune, Santana, and Valdez for councilor at-large. If you live in Boston (or many other U.S. cities), don't forget to vote before or on 11/4.

MTA member here. I do not appreciate being bombarded with billionaire-funded anti-union "digitally created" (AI?) ads on social media trying to connect my teachers union to "political violence." Proud my union advocates for teachers and students. #UnionStrong www.influencewatch.org/non-profit/a...
