"While other universities report that the humanities are shrinking, at Berkeley, the opposite is true. The music major is the fastest-growing major on campus. We are finding bigger classrooms because film is exploding. English is back to the numbers we saw 15 years ago. We are hiring" bit.ly/4ohKuOe

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Mark your calendars because #HCWvsHunger 2025 starts in just one week…

And if you donated early due to the shutdown keep those receipts because we are going to find a way to count them.

Let’s feed some more people 🍎

Just got an email from my SRO for the study section that was missed in October. Good news is that they are trying to reschedule ASAP (Dec/Jan). The bad news is that CSR is mandating that only the the top third (not half) of applications will get discussed for the next 2 rounds.

Preliminary data from @umich.edu survey on student AI use for class.

Most rarely/sometimes use AI & always follow class policies, but think others frequently use AI & only sometimes follow policies.

Perceptions of misuse ≠ reality

Misperceptions may provide implicit permission for misuse.

It's real easy to make assumptions. I was a controller at ZTL (Atlanta Center) for 25 years and I can't tell you them implications of every detail. But I can point you towards the data the FAA releases.

As a food bank volunteer , some tips on how to be most helpful during this challenging time (personal views only):
1) If you can, avoid calling or emailing. Food banks are overwhelmed and are often staffed by volunteers. Most have websites with FAQs.
2) Prioritize $ donations when feasible.

If you’re in a university community, regardless of whether the government is shutdown, consider supporting your university pantry, if they have one. Money is helpful, but also consider foods that are from a wide range of cultures/countries for international students.
