We also don't have a Best Horror or Best Action at the Oscars either. Genre is really getting the short of the stick

There's a good 10 min talk by @jtoresson.bsky.social at Games Talks Live about this: www.youtube.com/live/rOqEjRi... it's towards the middle of the video. "Act like you're going to self publish your game" and he debunks most publisher excuses

itch is SO small and I have known the site long enough to trust that this isn't them acting maliciously, but itch is SO small and I can't really resent them acting defensively so much as be furious that like two US payment processors get to determine what gets to be made worldwide.

Something I didn’t speak to at the time, but should now — it’s not like itchio or Steam have a choice
If they don’t comply with payment processor requests, they lose access to the payment processor. Without the payment processor, the platform falls apart. It ceases to exist. They’re being bullied

Why is this a thing? Alternatively, why isn't there a separate thing targeting the clearly alt-right focused games on there?

Actually, it's the opposite. You'll never deploy solar panels across 100% of the surface, so if managed properly, you generate unlimited clean energy and lower the temp of the water, helping the biome 😅 nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/53...

One example I can give you is that at least up until 14, you get "awards" at the end of each academic year that are only based on your school test performance. There's 1 First Prize, 1 Second Prize, 1 Third Prize. I know parents who bribed lecturers to ensure that their kid got good grades for these

That is a very good question - I don't know. I'm talking from my own experience both as an Eastern European and as a game developers who's worked there and with that scene for over a decade at this point. It's not super different from the Silicon Valley mentality, just affected by other factors

There's a lot culturally to be taken into consideration whenever looking at games made by Eastern European developers. So much of growing up in a post-fall-of-iron-curtain culture is about being self-made and pushing exceptional individualism, and designers and developers will take into their games
