Most statisticians would laugh at hearing about these types of interpretations of z-scores or outliers. Unfortunately, this is all REAL and could lead to REAL consequences for about 100 faculty/staff/students. 5/5 #LNK #Nebraska #Huskers @amstatnews.bsky.social

In particular, they say a negative z-score for a metric represents a bad department and they redefine outliers as outside of +-1 for z-scores. See 40:56 to 44:28 at www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUk2... for our recent seminar on these issues. 4/ #LNK #Nebraska #Huskers @amstatnews.bsky.social

Please get the word out. SaveOurStats.com provides details and timeline about what has happened over the last two months. In particular, university administrators have misused statistical practice to justify their proposals. 3/ #LNK #Nebraska #Huskers @amstatnews.bsky.social

All faculty/staff in the department will lose their jobs and 80 students will lose their majors. We will need your help. The Board of Regents will meet on December 5 to vote on eliminating the department. More details about how to help will follow. 2/ #LNK #Nebraska #Huskers @amstatnews.bsky.social

An important part is 40:56 to 44:28. This is where administrators were told to interpret z-scores as "a negative score does not imply that a unit does something poorly" but then they use negative z-scores as reasons to eliminate departments. 2/2 #Nebraska #Huskers #LNK @amstatnews.bsky.social

This criteria is what UNL Graduate Council and U. of N. Executive Graduate Council used when voting on whether to eliminate the corresponding departments' grad programs. Both votes were unanimous: RETAIN all programs. Here's a summary from the UNL Grad Council:

The report does not address the criteria set by the APC to determine whether to eliminate a program. apc.unl.edu/procedures-b.... If it would have, I expect the vote would have been positive for the departments that had the vote go against them. 4/

The Department of Statistics received a 13-8 vote against elimination. While this is good, we are still waiting for the Chancellor's final decision. 3/

Numerous flaws in the budget reduction process were highlighted; individuals who constructed the Chancellor's proposal would not recuse themselves from voting 2/
