You cannot have full control over the dog when it's on a lead that offers it no resistance to going where ever the hell it wants.
If you want your dog to be able to roam, then make sure you have good recall and socialise your dog properly.

The lead part is often a ribbon with what can become sharp edges. I wouldn't want to grab one.

I changed to this - different energy provider, but same idea - when we got an electric car.
We charge the car cheaply overnight, and on days when the battery is full get back 200% of the cost of the overnight electricty from the feed in tarriff, and on days where we don't export we're still saving!
