My year end list of favorite avant garde jazz(ish) albums is now up on @passionweiss.bsky.social Take heed, I have only seen 2, or maybe 3, of these 10 albums on anybody else's comparable list. So get weird. Buy the ticket. Take the ride.
The 10 Best Avant-Garde albums of 2025

Chris Robinson ranks the best of spiritual jazz, semi-feral cello drone, beeping collisions of man and machine, and other forward-thinking experiments from the outer galaxies of sound

Playing my new pedal steel and it sounds so much better than my cheap lap steel and now I'm like "lap steel? What lap steel? I have a lap steel?"

Kind of weird that musicians get put through hell when they don't clear a sample.... But AI weirdos can sample+ scrape literally everything ever recorded+ spit it back out at us. Meanwhile I get copyright flagged posting my OWN music on Instagram or whatever. I feel like there should be a better way

Incredible words from real boxer Anthony Joshua after he knocked Jake Paul the fuck out lol

Anthony Joshua was playing for keeps against fake ass "boxer" Jake Paul. This is what happens when you punch bullies and charlatans in the face: you break their jaw and send them to the hospital.

I did a foolish thing--although my wife kind of gave me the final push to do it--and bought this nice 70s vintage D10 BMI pedal steel. Can I play pedal steel? No. Do I play lap steel? Yes. Even so, this is going to be a lot of fun work learning to play this thing. It sounds so good.

I gotta think that when Grant Green called "My Favorite Things" for this session McCoy and Elvin were both like "you gotta be fuckin kidding me."

I can't wait for the debut album from Sloppy Redaction. Now what genre might that band play? Mid to late 90s granola jam band? Maybe it's a proto punk/garage trio?
Sloppy redactions are remarkably easy to sleuth around, have fun out there

Email from ChatGPT with a subject line of "Easy self-care you can start today." Get the fuck outta here. How about that for some self care?

Somebody set the odds for me buying a pedal steel guitar on Friday. Have only seen it on Facebook marketplace and it's 3.5 hours away one way. Luckily if I buy it I already own a pair of Justin boots and a Montana Silversmiths belt buckle, so it might get honky tonk real fast on Saturday.

Am thinking of an older Earl Sweatshirt lyric: "all I want is my time and my mind intact/once they gone you can't buy em back."

My favorite Sinatra record without a doubt. The charts on this are just perfection.
Frank Sinatra 🎂 When I was in college, I asked my father to make me a Sinatra mix tape. My only direction was the swinging stuff. His eyes lit up, and he went to work. Heavy on the 50s. Billy May, Nelson Riddle, a taste of Quincy J. On side 2, he just had this 👇 The greatest.

also, just because your book hasn't gone into copyediting doesn't mean we aren't working on the book in other ways—marketing and publicity, copy and metadata, etc. a lot goes into publishing a book!
Put differently: projects “sitting” doesn’t mean time lost/wasted. We spend weeks scheduling projects for publication in a specific month. Not hearing anything for a few weeks while your ms is one of 20 being prepped for production doesn’t mean it will appear in the world any later.

Cut to a worker in a warehouse somewhere with a marker, putting a little dot or line on the page edges of this nugget, just before boxing them up and shipping them to an Ollie's remainder bin near you.

For a 1945 recording session for RCA that yielded 6 sides, Leonard Feather, as leader and producer, paid himself $180. Duke only got $90. Billy Strayhorn got $80. Johnny Hodges, $150. Red Norvo a paltry $50. Louis Armstrong did OK though: $300. Archival research is fun. Tax documents are great.
