This is a remarkable bit of reporting and it's so well-written and so strangely novelistic I had to consciously remind myself that this is ACTUALLY HAPPENING NOW.

[shamelessly both promoting Dorian's point and adding my own]

Farage has always been very good at doing sort of golf club racism. He has an instinctive grasp on what codes to use and how much he can say before people recoil that his heirs and imitators lack. (...more)
It's revealing about taboos around racism that the visceral bullying racism of schoolboy Farage cuts through while the much more consequential thinly veiled racism of adult Farage doesn't. Many people need that veil and flinch when it's removed. You can advocate racist policies but not say the words

Zero tolerance for doomerism. Stop lazily accepting that everything is screwed forever. Stop normalising low expectations. That’s part of the problem & it’s what the bastards want. It’s also a product of privilege. People in more desperate situations don’t have the option to just sit back & shrug.

OK I thought this was a joke, but nope, apparently it's real. The World Cup draw will conclude with a live performance of YMCA, Donald Trump's signature rally song.

Farage boycotting the BBC would be like a scared woman finally getting free of her abusive husband because she was too boringly submissive. Run, girl! Take this unexpected opportunity and run like the wind!

Thunderball seems to have fallen slightly out of favour but I remain very fond of it - it was the first Connery-Bond film I saw at the cinema (on a double-bill with You Only Live Twice). This looks like a fun event. Plus Martine Beswick!

Even in the days of It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Love Thy Neighbour and The Black & White Minstrel Show, I don't recall "Gas the Jews" or "Hitler was right" being acceptable banter.
The Daily Mail is getting Farage so, so wrong. Shameful. He didn't "turn the tables" on anyone. They should be condemning antisemitism and racism, not giving it a free pass.

Again, the most remarkable thing about the Trump administration is gleefully boasting about crimes and releasing the evidence because they genuinely don't understand what a crime is.

This is the sharpest criticism yet of Operation Kill Them All from a senior congressional Republican. Everything he says is not just correct, but also totally obvious.
GOP Rep. Mike Turner: "This activity that's happening in the Caribbean where they are hitting these boats -- these individuals if they were captured and tried and convicted, they would be guilty of criminal activity for which they're not subject to capital punishment. These people are being killed."

As someone who grew up in the Anglican Church (I'm the son of a preacher man) but never really found my faith, it was the importance of community and storytelling that helped me recognise and appreciate why my Dad does what he does. Josh O'Connor's character here absolutely nails that perspective.
WAKE UP DEAD MAN is definitely the most Miss Marple-y of @rianjohnson.bsky.social's Benoit Blanc whodunnits, what with its small rural parish setting. The MAGA allegory was just subtle enough to float, and really appreciated how refreshingly faith and the Catholic Church was represented. More pls.
