The article talks about "systemic factors" and "cycles of violence"--if I took a highlighter to every word and phrase that is CLEARLY about race I feel like it would be most of the text! But it's like we can only talk about race if we don't talk about race! It's bizzare!

Here's another article where she does talk explicitly about violence facing BIPOC communities, and women in particular.
The writer is a Black woman, so I would suspect it of being her editor's choice and not hers. OTOH, her beat seems to be gun violence in the US generally, so it's possible this is a choice on her part in order to be seen as "objective" (which I understand, but hate).

I do think there's a difference between what we as a society have accepted and what individual members of that society find acceptable, when phrased so starkly (accurately), and I think the work is to bring the former more in line with the latter
