“This surprises you? Perhaps you think that we all have a plan at this moment and are just waiting to enact it?” Maksim chuckled. “No. A plan is what we need. I know you have one. I can see it in your eyes.” “Maksim, I don’t really…” “Relax, Ray. I won’t ask what it is, yet. You and James will keep your secrets as long as you have to. You always do. But if there is something I can do to help, say the word.” I swallowed hard. Maksim was a good agent. Smart, dedicated, cool under pressure. And he was scared now. He needed me to have a plan because he needed someone to have a plan. So, no pressure, then. But maybe it would be better for morale if I didn’t dissuade him. “There is something I need to know.” I considered my wording carefully. It would make him feel better to think I had something planned, unless he realized that said plan was insane. That would only make things worse.

“We take the fire stairs down the side of the building, when we reach the ground, head for the shopping mall across the street. Get inside, lose yourselves in the crowd. Whatever happens, do not stop, just run. If we get separated, we’ll meet in the coffee shop on the north side, then get a car from there. Understood?” They both nodded mutely. “Great.” I handed the gun back to Liz. “You might need this. Just…be careful where you aim it, alright? Now, let’s go. And hurry, before they figure out this is where we went.” We scrambled down the rusty ladder that led to the stairs, which zigzagged down the side of the building. The alley was quiet, and for a moment, I thought we might get away clean. But, when we were about one story from the ground, I saw a gunman round the corner underneath the stairs. I cursed under my breath. We were too exposed up here; it would be like shooting fish in a barrel. So, as he raised his weapon, I figured I only had one viable option. “Remember, don’t stop!” I shouted over my shoulder, then I vaulted the railing and dropped.

Where ‘Mikiva’ had once stood was… words failed her. It was amorphous, flickering and changing before her eyes. There was nothing that she could focus on. For a moment she had to close her eyes, trying to staunch the panic that rose in her just from gazing on its chaotic shape. A being with no fixed physical body. The true form of a demon. “I won’t allow you to speak to her any longer.” Its high, piping voice did nothing to settle Fox’s jangled nerves. “I know what she wants, and it isn’t to be rid of me.” Its… limb? Did it have limbs? Well, whatever the extension of its being that was currently crushing the life out of her was called, it had intensified its efforts. Fox pushed back, forming a barrier tight to her skin and expanding it until the goop exploded off her like a bursting bubble. Breathing hard, she clambered to her feet. “It might not be as simple as that, demon. I don’t intend to just lie down and die.” “And I don’t intend to kill you.” Somehow, she could tell it was smiling. “I don’t have to. Fancy mage tricks aside, you have no real power here. This is my realm, and I have you for as long as I wish. As long as it takes to break you.”

The tight confines of the tunnels and the unfamiliarity of the terrain had impeded her initially, but she was getting the hang of it much faster than they were catching on to her. The priest and the scout ducked down a side passage and Mikiva positioned herself just out of sight, near the mouth of the tunnel. “Now, do you want to explain what is going on?” D’arryd snarled. “What do you think? I did what you asked, and it all went to shit,” the priest snapped. “How so?” “I gave her the mixture, but it didn’t work like it does for the priests. Normally, they just enter a quiet trance state. Even the large dose wouldn’t explain…” “I don’t care, B’ennit.” The scout cut him off. “Whatever happened to her, it was probably just Their judgment. What matters is that it’s over, now.” “But it isn’t, D’arryd! You aren’t listening. She’s not… She escaped into the tunnels.” “What!? Why didn’t you stop her?” “I tried! How do you think I ended up like this?” he gestured to his face.

“No, don’t move,” Tom insisted. “The medics will be there in a few minutes, and if they don’t find you in that car seat, I will make sure they hold you overnight in the med center for observation. See if I don’t.” “Fine, I’m staying put.” “Good. Because if you don’t get back here in one piece, I won’t be able to kill you myself.” “It’s sweet that you care.” I leaned my head back against the headrest and closed my eyes. Everything hurt, kind of like I had been hit by a car, appropriately enough. It would be nice to just rest for a few minutes. And that was when I heard the whoosh of the gasoline igniting. I could not catch a break today. I muted my earpiece and swore colorfully. A spark from the electrical system, or heat from one of the engines must have caught the leaking gas. Flames licked the outside of my car. I couldn’t stay here, or I would cook. I wrenched the door open and stumbled out, then glanced back at the other car. The succubus hadn’t moved. If I left her there, she would burn alive. Perhaps a fitting end for her, but I couldn’t just sit here and let her die.

“But how? We can’t just break in. We have no idea what we’d be walking into, and I doubt they are giving guided tours,” Av’ry noted. “Ah, but that’s where you are wrong.” Fox’s eyes glimmered deviously. “What are you suggesting, Fox?” Av’ry shot her a suspicious look. “As it happens, the people who own the temple are ready to debut their renovations. Three days from now, they are hosting a very exclusive gala, invitation only, for every noble within travelling distance. They have all been called for what the invitations promise will be a historical unveiling.” “Of what?” Mikiva raised an eyebrow. “They are a bit vague on that point. You know how nobles like an exclusive, mysterious event. Draws them like moths to a flame.” “True.” Mikiva nodded, thoughtfully. “But how does that help us? We aren’t exactly nobility, nor do we have an invite.” “Wrong again. Or rather, half-correct.” Fox chuckled. “We do, of course, have an invitation. And the nobility part is easy enough to fake.” She tossed the envelope down on the table.

A new body would not rival his previous form, he had grown rather attached to that one, but it would be infinitely better than his current prison. This weak cage of flesh was wholly unworthy of him. It was only temporary, Redacted reminded himself. The only thing that had changed was the timetable. He was no longer willing to be patient. No longer willing to humor his puppet. He wanted the gem, and he wanted it now. He could stand this only so long. Holding up a soft, pink hand, he watched as ice crystals formed on the surface, steam rising from the freezing flesh. He chilled the hand until the pain was nearly unbearable, any longer and he knew he would lose the limb, then he allowed it to warm again. He flexed his fingers and the thin layer of ice on the surface cracked and fell away. Redacted took a deep breath and calmed himself. As good as it felt to punish this body, it wouldn’t do to damage it, not while he was trapped inside. Later. Until then, there were plenty of human bodies that he wasn’t using. Plenty of suffering to spread around.

“Just drink your shitty coffee and stop whining.” “Does that offer extend to me as well?” Mikiva appeared in the doorway. “I promise you won’t hear a bad word about it from me.” “Don’t make promises you can’t keep,” Av’ry warned. “It’s pretty bad.” “This morning, I couldn’t care less,” Mikiva groaned. “Besides, the kind of liquor you drink, you probably shouldn’t complain about flavor.” “Well, if you promise not to whine about it like him,” Fox jerked a thumb in Av’ry’s direction, “then help yourself.” “Don’t say I didn’t warn you,” Av’ry muttered. Grabbing a mug, Mikiva collapsed into a chair. “So, did I miss anything?” “Nothing important. We wouldn’t start without you. You are an integral part of the plan,” Fox replied. “You have a plan?” Mikiva sat up straighter in the chair. “In a manner of speaking.” “Well, don’t keep me in suspense.” Mikiva took a tentative sip from her cup. She frowned slightly but, true to her word, didn’t say a thing.

With that, the dream dissolved, and Fox blinked awake on the cold stone floor of the draconic ruin. Av’ry was sitting with his back against a pillar, idly polishing the Slayer’s Blade and watching her with a strange look on his face. “What?” She rubbed her eyes and pushed off the blankets. “You were talking in your sleep.” “Was I?” She laughed in a way she hoped was convincing. “What did I say?” “I don’t know. Couldn’t really make anything out. Everything all right?” “Why wouldn’t it be? Strange dreams, that’s all.” “Maybe it’s this place.” Av’ry shrugged, glancing back at the Archive room behind them. “There is an odd aura in here.” “Yeah, that’s probably it.” Fox chewed her lip. “Can I ask you something?” “Of course.” “Have you ever had someone call you special in a way that felt more like a threat than a compliment?” “What?” He squinted at her, confused. “Never mind.” Fox shook her head. “Like I said, odd dreams.”

“Why? Who are you, exactly?” He glared at her, overflowing with quiet malice. “You know I waited for her return every day? I never gave up hope, even after years had passed. “When I was old enough, I became a scout, to search for her. Anything to keep from believing that she was gone. That she had abandoned me. “But then you show up instead. And I get to learn the ‘truth’ thirdhand. Tell me, is that fair, outsider? Is it? Because to me, this all seems like a cruel joke.” Fox stared at him for a long moment, not understanding. “Abandoned? By who…?” And then she realized. “Oh. Shit.” His mouth set into a thin line. “You didn’t know?” “My mother… she didn’t really talk about her life before. I think it hurt her too much.” “A convenient excuse. Maybe you simply aren’t who you claim to be.” “I have proven that. Why would I lie about the rest?” “A good question.” His stare bored holes into her. Fox met his eyes, giving him what he asked for. “Everything I said was true. Iella was my mother and I’m sorry you had to find out this way. About her death.”

“We were not being especially subtle in our search, Av’ry. We could have easily drawn their attention and led them right to her. We need to find someplace safe. Preferably quickly.” “Don’t you think you are being a bit paranoid? No one even knows where we…” Av’ry turned back towards Mikiva, fully intending to finish his thought, but instead she shoved him backwards, hard. The arrow that embedded itself in the crate behind him kind of made his point invalid. “So, leaving now?” he asked. “It might be a little late for that, if they have archers in place,” Mikiva replied. “Go left, that alley has some cover. Maybe we can lose them.” “What do you think the chances of that are?” Av’ry asked as they scrambled for the alley. “After they’ve already fired a shot? Very poor. Their men are all in position or they wouldn’t have made their move. I imagine they’ve been watching us for some time now, waiting for the right moment.” “So, this should be fun then,” Av’ry replied sarcastically. “Just shut up and run,” the dark-haired spy advised curtly.

“You think I am self-destructive?” Av’ry asked. “You spend too much time with me to be anything else. I am not a healthy person to be around, my friend.” “You can’t really believe that.” “No? Why not? Look at where we are. What we’re doing. Would a sane person follow me here?” Fox had an uncomfortably good point. “I probably would have done you a service if I really had left you behind. Gotten out of your life. Would have been safer for you.” He had to ask. “Why didn’t you?” “Selfishness, I guess.” She shrugged. “I’d miss you. Sometimes it’s hard to do the right thing.” “Hey.” Av’ry put a hand on her shoulder, turning her back to face him. “We should keep going.” She tried to pull away, but he stopped her. “It can wait a second. I need you to hear this.” He took a breath. “This might not be the right time, but I really don’t see us having this conversation again, so just listen to me, alright?” She nodded absently. “Good. Because this is important: I am not a child. And I’m not an idiot. I know what we do is dangerous. I chose to be here. Which, by my math, makes me no more self-destructive than you. Not that that is a high bar to clear, frankly. And if you ever try ditching me for my ‘safety’, I swear I will hunt you down, whatever the risks, if only to kick your ass when I find you. Understand me?”

I looked at the wound. It actually wasn’t that bad, a clean shot that had skimmed the fatty part of the thigh. Just a graze, really. It was bleeding as much as you’d expect but probably hadn’t done too much real damage. If he’d been able to run here on it, it would probably be fine, assuming he didn’t lose too much more blood. “Just keep pressure on it. It doesn’t look that serious.” “Well, it hurts like hell,” he complained. “It is a gunshot wound. Of course it hurts.” He didn’t seem to have anything to say to that, but he was starting to look a little grey. Hopefully, that was the adrenaline crash and not the blood loss. Keeping him alert and talking would be best. “Ok, I need you to tell me the rest. Everything you were going to tell Cooper. And who would have killed him for it.” “It’s kind of a long story.” “I’m not going anywhere. Maybe you could start by telling me who you are?” “Oh, I’m so sorry.” He blushed slightly, which was a good sign on the blood loss front. “Simon Vale.”

The Malazan Book of the Fallen series is standout epic fantasy to me.

It has an expansive, but compelling, cast and the story follows many branches that weave together in fascinating ways.

I found myself particularly invested in the characters.

The obnoxious, spoiled jackass didn’t even know what suffering was. And part of her was dying to demonstrate for him. It wasn’t like he didn’t deserve it. He had poisoned her. Who would blame her? For a moment, Fox allowed the fantasy, stoked the righteous fury that had kindled in her blood. Unbidden, or at least unconsciously bidden, flames began to dance across her clenched fists, bright in the dim tunnels. And for just an instant, she could see what she would do to him, so clear that she could taste it, feel it, smell it. It was the smell that stopped her cold. She would never forget the sickly-sweet stench of burning flesh, never forget the first time… Tendrils of fear constricted her heart like a vice, strangling the anger, crushing it into nothingness. The flames died instantly. Whatever progress she had made, Fox still feared herself more than anything else. She likely always would.

We’ll find more soon, I am sure.” Carmine smiled. “Easy for you to say, you aren’t the one working hundred-hour weeks.” Carmine shrugged. “We just have to cast a wider net. We will find people. And if we don’t, we can reach out to the other enclaves, maybe they have some to spare.” “I hope so. I need a vacation. Somewhere sunny.” I wasn’t holding out hope; the other enclaves were probably no better off than we were. “Wouldn’t that be nice?” Carmine commiserated. “Somewhere with nude beaches, maybe.” “Don’t you get enough nudity in your day-to-day life?” “You can never really have enough nudity.” I sighed. “I’m going to the target range. I’ll see you later, Carmine.” The incubus turned and sauntered off. I watched him go. He carried himself with the easy grace and assurance of a practiced predator, which he was, in a way, so perhaps that wasn’t surprising. But maybe it was why I always had trouble turning my back on him. Once he was out of sight, I continued on my way to the basement.
