It was too weird. Way, way too weird, even for Edie’s life. But even only seeing him in a single photograph, Edie could pick out Cillian’s beautiful face in moments. Milo’s ex boyfriend. The serious/not serious one. The one that looked like someone dedicated their lives to carving the concept of ice-cold beauty from perfect marble, and made Milo smile into the camera when they took a picture together.

How to fail bard training.

- Brother’s Keeper, book one of my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power.
Chalmalch had not seen his like in at least a century. He was perfect material for the vocation. Perhaps too perfect. He'd reached half-bard, and then abandoned the path, a terrible waste. Moreso, it was blasphemous to be so gifted of Maledin-Iryla and disdain to dedicate that gift to their service. Why? Fear of unworthiness? Arrogance? Or something else? Rushak's mind was not easy to steer along the narrow, convoluted trails of orthodoxy. The majority of Chalmalch's Acolytes followed those trails without doubt. And Rushak—How had he failed to place that ill-fitting name with that unforgettable face? The tortuous questions framed by thin lips, the perilous thoughts nearly voiced, and in the end locked away for another time and place. Brother's Keeper A.C. Turek

If he keeps his calm, he has… not terrible chances,” she conceded. “I still put my gold on Bi-Han, though.” Shang Tsung hummed. “What would throw such a disciplined monk like Liu Kang off balance, I wonder?” “Oh, I know just the thing. Make Kitana tell him our mother arranged a marriage for her, and he’ll forget his own name!” She laughed as she pictured the scene. Shang Tsung’s control over souls allowed him to shapeshift, though he rarely used his magic anymore, and certainly not those more mischievous applications, preferring to dedicate himself to chemistry. A prank would be the perfect time to dust off his abilities—or maybe Mileena could try doing it herself. Heh. She could already imagine Shang’s lecture if she even suggested that.

Do you want to know the message those thousand beating wings revealed?” Rowen’s eyes have narrowed. He suspects a trap. He is right in a way. As a man who had dedicated his life to things unseen, the temptation of arcane knowledge is too much for him to resist. “Be goin’ a lot faster if y’weren’t fuckin’ *watchin’* me,” the assassin muttered, still fighting with his waistcoat. “Ain’t a fuckin’ spectator sport.” *I’m watching you because I’m halfway terrified that if I look away you’ll stop breathing.* But he wasn’t going to say that, and Sabbat was making it quite clear that he didn’t need – or, more importantly – *want* any help with what he was currently doing. “My apologies. There’s not much space in here, but I can-“ “Said y’could stop watchin’ me. Din’t say y’had t’move.” Which was hair-splitting of the worst kind, but then, in the condition he was currently in, he’d earned the damn right to split hairs. “Would you prefer it if I sat here and read?” “Don’t care what you fuckin’ do, so long as it ain’t starin’ at me when I’m tryin’ t’concentrate. Jus’… stay there.” *And that, I suppose, is as much as I’m likely to get out of him on the topic.* He shifted position, moving to sit with his back against the tub, and cracked open one of the books he’d picked up from the other room: a not particularly well-written history of the city that he’d brought along mostly because it had a chapter dedicated to artefacts found in archaeological excavations when the university was being built which might, if they were ridiculously lucky, give them at least a little more information on the likely provenance of the box. *At least the prose is bad enough to be somewhat amusing, I suppose, since that’s likely the only use we’re going to get out of this.*

Memories flooded him: his childhood DEDICATION ceremony and Frasca, a filly, nipping at his shirt; Lara laughing, her hair flashing in the sun; Teryl at the harpstrings; emeralds and blood; a flaming felara and villages burning; Drisal's lips against his forehead; and then the memories turned into something else. The harpstrings sliced Teryl's fingers off. The fires advanced until the whole Forest was immolated and shaped like his own body consumed within and without by dru'ach, and there was soon no telling what was a memory and what was a corruption in his mind. Jayden's the one who wants to use necromancy. If we stop him, Nico goes back to just being one skeleton and those spirits can pound on the door all they want." My voice must have risen because it's Dahlia who answers me. "And how do you propose you stop this necromancer? Now that he's sunk his teeth in, he's sure to dedicate himself to the goal of using his true magic. It's only your father's own weakness in the area that stopped him from diving deeper into it." I whip my head towards her. "That's a lie!" She shakes her head, sadly. "I'm sorry, but it's not. A necromancer, once tasting that power, always strives for more, and your father was no exception. When the Council took him, he had assembled quite a collection of necromancy instructions from the spirit he'd contacted in the past, and from the notes he had made, he had failed to replicate them, but not for lack of trying. It was for his own protection--as well as the town's--that we offered the punishments. Strip him of his power, and the temptation wouldn't arise again. Keep him locked up, and he would be unable to try spells he wasn't equipped to perform. Exile him and remove his access to the rift. We can offer two of the three for him and Jayden, now. But I suspect you're running out of time to stop them from opening the rift."

I can see it in your eyes.” “Maksim, I don’t really…” “Relax, Ray. I won’t ask what it is, yet. You and James will keep your secrets as long as you have to. You always do. But if there is something I can do to help, say the word.” I swallowed hard. Maksim was a good agent. Smart, dedicated, cool under pressure. And he was scared now. He needed me to have a plan because he needed someone to have a plan. So, no pressure, then. But maybe it would be better for morale if I didn’t dissuade him. “There is something I need to know.” I considered my wording carefully. It would make him feel better to think I had something planned, unless he realized that said plan was insane. That would only make things worse.

Is it really something we can tell those idiots wreaking havoc outside?” said Sophie, watching as Scruffy zigzagged past a vampire engrossed in a debate with a dockworker. “We treat them like idiots, and rightfully so, since they behave like idiots. But shouting at an idiot won't make him any less of an idiot. And lying to an idiot just points him in a different direction. Have we considered why they believe Maestro’s nonsense in the first place? All they ever hear is shouting, Polo. From Florenti, from Maestro, from us, from every headline pouring panic into their heads. They don’t have a quiet place to listen and learn. They obviously haven’t earned one, I don’t deny that. But even idiots can learn, if you stop beating them with the truth, and start showing it to them instead. Show them that we’re not so different, all of us.” She gestured towards the bar, where differences of various shapes and sizes were busy getting equally drunk. “Maybe instead of locking them out, we leave the door open. Let them see for themselves.” She was wise for her age, Polo had to admit, as he met her earnest gaze. Completely wrong, of course, but wise all the same. In his experience, the truth didn’t change minds so much as harden whichever part of the skull it bounced off. And showing it to them would accomplish no more than showing a haddock a fresco. Sophie was right about the way things ought to be, but people, at their very core, simply didn't work like that. If they did, half the city wouldn't be outside proving her wrong.

Only "zigzag" in the story:
The center of Devon was an open space marked by a large stone fountain built. No water flowed from it, and like the gate doors, it was defaced with crude graffiti. Its base had become a bin filled with broken bottles and other assorted trash. Although an open area, it felt cramped. The skyline of the city loomed all around, and despite traditionally being squares, Devon’s center—Vega Plaza, according to Captain Vance—was more of a zigzag.

A city in Hell…
Serasthial lead on again, through streets that zig-zagged up the mountain. There were few people out, and those Helena saw were strange. People with the faces and heads of animals, hybrid creatures, people whose proportions were swollen or shrunken in unusual ways all passed quietly by them, disappearing into dwellings or courtyards as they went, minding their business. They passed by sections that looked torn out of the mountainside by massive claws and the road ended abruptly once, forcing them to clamber up a rock face where hand-holds had been rubbed clean by the occupants of the city. Another hole in the road was ringed by a jaundiced yellow substance that fizzled on the rock. Someone had placed a set of rickety boards to bridge this gap and locals passed over it breezily, as if they didn't notice. The higher they got, the wider the streets and the grander the homes.

The girl stretched out her slender arm to touch Reggie’s smooth pate. The skull dodged and the girl grinned, trying again. Reggie jigged sideways, staying just out of reach as the girl attempted to tag him. As the game unfolded between the two ghosts, a sense of correctness settled in Spencer’s chest. Like a stone dropped in a still pond, certainty sank all the way through him until it rested firmly against the bedrock of his heart. Thank you, Gray Lady, for always showing me the way. Out of habit, Spencer reached for his holy symbol then felt like a fool when he remembered the twisted silver loop was still in the rectory, safe around his unconscious neck. Reggie’s eyes flickered, a question tickling at the back of Spencer’s mind. They shared a look and understanding arced like lightning between them. Had he been in his body, Spencer would have stooped over with his hands on his knees to look the girl in her eyes without looming. As it was, he attempted to hover a little lower. Are you ready, little one? The girl nodded again, solemnly this time. Follow, Reggie. Play chase with him and think of that feeling lasting forever, the fun and the joy of it never-ending. Reggie whizzed around her, a green streak, before zipping low between the tombstones. Smiling, the girl gave chase, drifting after the skull as he zigged and zagged wildly through the cemetery. On the third lap around the graveyard, a tinkle of laughter filled the stagnant air. Like tiny silver bells chiming in your very soul, the sound echoed sharply, accompanied by the sweet scent of cookies and cakes. Spencer saw a flash of white ruffles passing behind a tombstone, and then the girl was gone, off to an eternity of fun and games, he hoped.

“Anything else I could help you with?” he asked. “Ye-e-eah,” I said slowly. “There’s a word here, Lazarus. Really small, right below the center. See? Do you know what that means?” He raised an eyebrow. “Lazarus? I’m not sure. Could be a family name.” “I’ve never met anyone named Lazarus.” “Well, we could find out.” He gestured for me to follow him. “Here, come with me.” I followed him, zigzagging through aisle after aisle, toward a section of the Library I’d never seen before. At last, we came to a clearing amid the shelves, where sitting atop a sturdy wooden pedestal was a strange off-white boxy device with wires trailing out of it. “What’s that?” I asked. “A computer,” said Mr. Gellar. As I followed him around to the front of the device, I saw that its face was like a glossy black mirror. “Think of it as a sort of knowledge machine. It has the whole Library catalogue stored in its memory.” I was in awe. “Memory? So is it... alive?” He grinned. “No, no. Not any more alive than the books are. But we can use it to search through the collection for anything we want. Saves a lot of time.”

Not far below, the trail he had ascended wound across and down and doubled back, across and down, repeating the pattern for thousands of spans. From where he sat near the innermost face of the curving range, he could not even see the tops of the trees growing on the slope beneath him. He loved the solitude and quiet, broken only by the wind soughing in the grass and the cries of the eagles, by whose outstretched wings the mountain dwellers made measure of vertical distance. Even more, he loved the view. About and beneath him, encompassed by the peaks, the land swept away and down like half a bowl in deepening shades of green, with the silver-green Forest puddled at the bottom.
