also soil contamination is an incredibly risky gamble. you can bore and try to figure out what you've got under ya but it's never certain and you inevitably always run into challenges. I'm unsure how nepa standards compare now that trump relaxed them but the 2020 updates were much stricter than 90's

I'm pretty sure that "cleaned up" in this instance was the bear minimum to install the original TRAX line and then the top soil to asphalt it over and seal the contaminants so that they are contained. it's my understanding that we'd still run into contaminants if we were to build structures.

the advantage we have because of the barriers keeping it undeveloped is that Murray city had a blank slate to work with for their state mandated station area plan. same as vineyard with Utah city. it's just been cheaper to built up Murray north so understandably development has been centered there
December 11, 2025 at 4:48 AM
I'm sure it will happen because it is possible to redevelop, but UTA doesn't have the funds to remediate that land so we have to get a developer willing to take on the extra cost. vineyard and Midvale did it (Bingham junction) so it can be done, just a matter of when.
December 11, 2025 at 3:04 AM
like vineyard is a similar boat and the city has been remediating for several years and just this year started building structures in the vicinity.
December 11, 2025 at 3:01 AM
there's not a lot we could do there because Murray is on a Superfund sight. significant remediation would be required to build any structures on that land, which is why it was just asphalted over

there are so many regulatory laws for safety that dictate how close benches can be to the road and ada dictates access paths and yea all but one bench in that video made me grimace

idk honestly it was in AC transit service area tho

almost everything I've ever heard about strong towns is negative.

I don't follow them so I don't really have an opinion but everyone I know that has consumed their content hasn't had good things to say as of late :/

I chose not to comment because I don't wanna rain on her parade but I needed to talk about it somewhere
December 10, 2025 at 8:29 PM
work😔
December 10, 2025 at 7:07 PM
they only have to do the very ends cuz the middle white part stays the same.

couple thousand to repaint or 1.4 million for new bus hard choice😛
December 10, 2025 at 7:07 PM
cuz 470x will need EV's too
December 10, 2025 at 6:48 PM
anyway those brand new cng's we ended up with are technically for 256 and we just moved up the purchase date for. we will probably back fill with new EV's eventually but the tariffs on them will likely be higher than the cng's were so we're kinda waiting to see if they go away
December 10, 2025 at 6:47 PM
but mvx's grant requires EVs on the route but not necessarily brand new ones so that's how we ended up with the 23’s being reallocated
December 10, 2025 at 6:43 PM
that is aggressively simplified but that's basically what happened
December 10, 2025 at 6:42 PM
that is because the pretty new bus you rode in was purchased instead of EV's cuz the feds were like *hint hint nudge nudge* your grant won't pay for EV's anymore cuz trump hates them so switch them to cng's
