this many hours into the recent release of epstein emails, much of the internet talking about it, and @bsky.app's 4/5 or arguably 5/5 trending topics are related to epstein and yet... no epstein trending tag?

was @sarahkendzior.bsky.social removed because @bsky.app wants to cover for the powerful?

about but unchecked war crimes, when the US (with its staunch support, its own history of making the same brutal choices, and a culture of big egos and needing to save face) is the only watchdog? If it’s true that Israel has used white phosphorus, does that violate your definitions yet? Or might it already violate your morals? The terms you review are not terms to be concerned with, they are actions and consequences—tragedies—that need to be stopped before they happen. I don’t know whether you respect other world leaders or people who work in international organizations like the UN. Many people have stated that Israel checks their boxes for genocide, violation of war crimes, and collective punishment. Might this encourage you to see the conflict through the lens of Israel holding Palestine in an apartheid state, and that the Oct 7 Hamas attack on Israeli civilians is now their justification to meaningfully eliminate Palestinian existence at last? I admire what and how you cover world affairs. I hear the dominant American narratives in some of what you say, as we are all influenced by what we are steeped in. I listen to the podcast because you specifically do a better job than most US coverage. But on this topic, I ask you to re-examine your positions by defining for yourself what amount of violence is justified here. Thank you for reading, if you did, I don’t know how many emails you must get! I hope I come off as respectfully asking you to take another look, rather than as judgmentally declaring that you’re wrong. I hope to be heard, not to be right. Take Care,

Dear Ben and Tommy, I’m writing to you both with the hope that I might persuade you to take another look at how you are discussing the Israel-Palestine conflict. You acknowledged that you have people in your life that feel strongly in a variety of directions, so I know I’m not the first to say things along the following lines. I hope to persuade you because I am deeply concerned that the American left’s perspective is leaving us short of stopping a genocide. You are discussing the finer details of definitions, acknowledging open questions but not starting to answer them, and (inadvertently, I think) phrasing things in quite passive terms. There are entities taking actions here. In your recent episode, “The Israeli Ground Invasion Begins,” you reviewed terms we are seeing in discussions of the conflict. You both take a look at how these terms are defined, and the focus is on how, in your opinion, Israel doesn’t yet check the boxes for collective punishment, ethnic cleansing, violation of war crimes, and genocide. On the first two, I respectfully point out that you say, “That is terminology that bears watching,” rather than “We are watching whether Israel crosses these lines with X, Y, Z actions.” With all of these terms, your focus and concern remains on whether it is accurate to apply them to any of what we see happening. The focus and concern should be on what we see happening. “When you see a continued siege, and cut off of food and fuel and water—and to your point you could soon see water-borne illnesses—at what point does that cross this threshold into collective punishment?” I ask you to answer that question for yourself. I tune in to hear your stances on questions just like this. I think it’s important to preemptively set a defining line that meets your morals, so that we know what we are watching out for. You also don’t answer the question for yourselves whether the proportion aspect of collective punishment is being met. It’s not an intentional avoidance, you start getting into how Israel is only held to account by the US (mmm a notably supportive ally is not such an appropriate judge, maybe?), that’s just the flow of conversation. But again I think it’s important to answer that question. What proportion of civilian deaths is appropriate to you? Where is your personal line on how to define collective punishment? “In this case, there’s plenty of other things to be concerned about, but I mean y’know, watch the language, obviously, and be concerned about it. But I think you’re right to caveat it.” I might have misunderstood this section, but again I am concerned about the genocide, not the language. It’s a simple point that you may feel I’m overstating. But is it not worth considering whether our language is unconsciously distancing ourselves from the violence? My position is that this is already a genocide with thinly veil intent by the Israeli government. You say yourselves that the US is the only power to keep Israel in check if it goes too far, a country with its own history of Islamaphobia clearing a path for two aimless wars in the middle east. So if Israel wanted to avoid international war crime charges it just has to avoid saying it’s a genocide? I know it’s more complicated than that but I’m just reiterating one of the logical paths that you two laid out. I already think enough leaders in the Israeli government and military have spelled out their genocidal intent. So, what else do we have to be concerned
