It's dumb & won't work but I don't think the Liberals choosing leaders who are like Ford is more complicated than the fact that he's won 3 majority governments in 3 straight elections, got a higher % of the vote in each election than in the prior election, and the polling all STILL looks like this:

Also, the Germans (who do tend to take Nazi symbols relatively seriously) might have an issue with it being considered a specifically Nazi symbol given that this is the rondel used on TODAY's German Air Force planes:

the shark closest to your body

(If this reference isn't clear, that's Justin Trudeau and his son at Halloween this year, with the elder Trudeau dressed as "left shark").

Salmon P. Chase died in 1873 and he was never even involved in the bank that was named after him (... four years after he died).

The first five images Google gives me in response to a search for birthday cake here in Toronto, fwiw (and my mind ALSO went immediately to a cake with white frosting):

I like this list from a top one hundred Canadian albums list on Wikipedia. Only three artists repeated, and they're pretty iconic Canadian artists.

Repost with an iconic fictional band.

I'm viewing this from Canada but I presume at least part of the reason that the media identifies Mayor Mamdani as a democratic socialist is because he self-identifies as a democratic socialist.

It's how he introduced himself to voters on his own website.

This is a fascinating framing given who granted the royal charter that lead to the British "discovering" Virginia.
And the fact that the word Virginia is literally an homage to her, and her reign, specifically.
(It was Queen Elizabeth I).
The formal colony started under James but SHE started it all.

I hope everyone is enjoying the World Series!

FWIW, Tressie McMillan Cottom articulated my take on Murphy's mushy, entirely insufficient response to all of this several orders of magnitude better than I ever could in her piece in NYT today:

Also, growing up in LA never stopped her from repping the Jays pretty much constantly and exclusively while she lived in Toronto.
October 29, 2025 at 1:19 PM
When she lived in Toronto, she was!
October 29, 2025 at 1:16 PM
Sure, but people in Toronto remember what team she repped, pretty much constantly, when she was living in Toronto.

I apologize if I've misunderstood this post where you said that Murphy's position strikes
you as reasonable as meaning that you think that his position is reasonable.

My mistake?

It may also be a UCP slogan but to be fair, it was the official motto of Alberta for 37 years before the UCP even existed and it's written on the Alberta's coat of arms.
October 16, 2025 at 5:43 PM
It's not a HUGE distinction (and clearly many people don't realize this) but I think Alberta is the only province that uses that phrase as their official provincial motto and has it on their coat of arms.

I keep seeing posts like these that suggest it's weird (and possibly highly partisan) for AB licence plates to have "Strong and Free" written on them but none of the posts mentions that Strong and Free has been the official motto of the province of Alberta since 1980.

It's on their coat of arms.
October 16, 2025 at 5:26 PM
To be fair...

"Strong and Free": The official motto of the province of Alberta for the last 45 years.

(I know it's written in Latin on the coat of arms but it's been on the coat of arms since 1980).
October 16, 2025 at 5:22 PM
I wouldn't trust the UCP either but fwiw, "Strong and Free" has been the motto of Alberta since 1980, which was 37 years before the UCP existed.

It's on the provincial coat of arms (in Latin).

I've gotta say, the fact that this search for the word "insurrection" got me ZERO hits on BlueSky this morning made me slightly nervous until I realized that search is simply broken down completely on here right now.

As a fellow Canadian I do love a, "The #1 and #3 highest-grossing movies of all time deserve more respect" discussion.

('Cause it's TRUE!!!).

Also, it lets me remind people that James Cameron also directed the #4 highest-grossing movie of all time.
October 6, 2025 at 8:44 PM
That said, I was nevertheless pretty impressed by, "Also, here's a movie with behind the scenes stuff about the making of the album I just released" and then...

...it was the #1 movie at the weekend box office and beat the #2 movie by over $20 million!!!
October 6, 2025 at 7:32 PM
Also it's not like in the Avatar movies it was all actors doing voiceover either.

They did motion and performance capturing for the whole thing.

They probably don't remember Prince because of that time he changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol.

I wonder why he did that...
