From what I understand, HG wasn't involved in that kinda stuff anymore in the early 90s so Macross II and Plus slipped by under the radar. Then presumably after Plus became a hit, they decided to step in and make demands, leading to things like VF-X2's US release being canceled.

Production order is generally advisable, but it's not gonna always work. Some people just aren't gonna watch old anime like MSG or SDF Macross and then you've gotta figure out what's palatable to them.

As I keep saying, IP owners need to learn to start behaving more like farmers who plan for the long term and who know when to rotate crops & let the soil fall fallow, rather than greedy robber barons who relentlessly stripmine until there’s nothing left and the whole thing collapses.

We've still got people saying "Gundam Origins" and "Gundam OO" so unfortunately some of these things will never go away.
