As we await the Senate vote on the congressional spending bill that could slash $1.1 billion from D.C.'s budget, a quick historical 🧵: Back in 2011, Congress used D.C. to avert a government shutdown. Local officials were furious. So they did something about it.

‼️ DC needs your help! The House budget forces DC to revert back to FY24 spending levels even though we’re in the middle of FY25. This means that we can’t spend local dollars and will face automatic major cuts to services like teachers, police, firefighters. Please call your reps! #handsoffdc ‼️
Looks like the D.C. Council is getting very actively involved in fighting a GOP spending bill that would force D.C. to cut roughly $1 billion out of the current year’s budget. Police could lose $67 million, firefighters $42 million, DCPS and charters $300 million plus.
I’m on my way to the Capitol right now with other councilmembers to ask House GOP to fix their mistake in the CR that would cut $1b from DC’s budget – DC's own money! It would cut police, fire, teachers & more. That does not make DC safer, cleaner, or better!

PRE-K SCRAMBLE: In a sign of a possibly tough D.C. budget to come, the city is telling parents with kids in pre-K3/4 programs run by community organizations (instead of by DCPS/charters) that funding for the 25-26 school year is uncertain, and they should lottery for other slots.
