Also watched from base as our Hueys and MH-53s from my future unit (1st SOW) extracted ~1000 people off the roof of the MGM Grand Hotel when it burned in 1980...

Was stationed at Nellis AFB for 18 months JUN1980-NOV1981.
Never gambled once.
Already knew enough discrete math to get tossed from blackjack tables anyway.
I did love those $3.99 AYCE buffets.
Hung out at Lake Mead a lot...but not that motel.
Every day was an air-show...was there for that movie.

Made the best of it...
Stuck my nerdy Model U.N. math-team neck out and avoided getting bullied by being a 90-pound African-American kid playing varsity ice hockey...as a goaltender...in 1974-75.
Turned out that I wasn't bad...GAA 2.57. Gained respect.
Still...
No dates.
Didn't bother with prom.

Made the best of it...
