Edward Yang's Confucian Confusion and Mahjong used to be very hard to find in the US, but now Criterion has them on disk and streaming. I watched both on the latter this week, and my socks have been knocked off.

If this isn't the most perfect metaphor for our country... So much of the white working and middle classes are "the man whose truck got stuck in tye sinkhole," worsening their own lives with racism.

For what little it matters, I am muting people who post like this after a shooting, and unfollowing anyone who puts this shit into my timeline.

I missed it live, but this is a lovely moment- Jeff Hiller's name is announced, and Colman Domingo, Michael Urie and Bowen Yang all look as excited as they would be if they had won.

I really can't get over this.
These are the 10th through 12th cities in unofficial murder rates in 2025 so far. If he really thought the National Guard would be of help to Chicago, would he not also be calling on Shapiro to send troops to Philly?

I was 50% kidding, but... declined to comment? Won't confirm the numbers? That is how you react when reporters are contacting you about a bad thing!

I want to tell this kid that there is no theater industry worth mentioning in the US, and that the value of a related BFA is that it is a bachelor's degree you get for something you like, and that people making <5kyr in the "industry" usually have a better day job than college dropouts like me have.

The evils of the ongoing genocide in Gaza are so obvious that they cross a line even for some very stupid people, and you don't need to follow time-wasting nincompoops just because of a watermelon emoji.

Could you imagine what Obama's tweets would have been like when he was a Columbia student in the 80s? Even this passage from his memoir (published when he was a little older than Mamdani is now) hints at a personality we didn't get to know when he was running for major offices.

Jeffries refuses to endorse him, despite his district and home being in NYC. Gilibrand spread a smear about him (which she has apologized for since) around the time of Obama's call. Both of these examples are given in the article, which opens this way, and contrasts Obama with current Dem leaders:

Even Jeanne Dielman has frames without Delphine Seyrig. This is from a * shot* in which she does appear, but exits. Has any significant feature actually kept the same actor in each of its 24 frames per second?

Is the same phrase "appears in every frame" in reference to an actor having ever intended literally? In the case of a Hollywood Reporter article about the upcoming "Blue Moon," which claims Ethan Hawke appears in every frame, I hope not. These are just from the trailer!

"Good luck," one of my passing neighbors said.
"Is it that obvious I'm going to a job interview?" I couldn't help but ask after thanking her.

I was on the cusp of greatness, but I guessed the wrong 2001 movie co-starring De Niro and an Ed for one of the Brando categories.
