It's also one of the dumbest ways to convey the urgency of an issue, as what it is often used for is something where the alarm has been sounding for a long time.

And lo and behold, it won't fit. Because I can see size. I can see invisible 3D shit? I dunno, I can't explain it.

My wife can remember things, but in her mind's eye, she shrinks (worse case) or enlarges it to make it fit in the space. She has exclaimed "You can't even picture it! How do you know it won't fit!? I can see it will, I can see it clear as day."

But the most bizarre thing? My wife is very visual. But I can look at a space and consider the thing we are talking about that, that is not currently present be a much better judge of it will fit than my wife.

I have no idea how I do it. I can remember the size of things, without seeing them.

"Picture the rooms in your house."

Yeah. We failed on step one. I can list the rooms in my house. But I cannot see them, or picture them. 🤷‍♂️

The hardest part was learning that my mind did work differently. I just thought that "picture a [thing] in your mind" was an amorphous thing for everyone, that it wasn't a concrete thing for people to do. Things like "The memory palace technique" will not work for me.

The supreme irony here may be that the Canadian populist politician Poilievre gained support by blaming Trudeau for high food prices while at the same time having his campaign run by a top Loblaws consultant. I am filling out a form right now to get $50 from a Loblaws bread price-fixing settlement.
