It was one of the first recorded instances of a woman voting for an MP in the UK.

She was crowned Elizabeth I in 1742 and remained Empress till her death in 1762.

General Franco seized power in 1939. Under his dictatorship only the heads of households could vote, radically reducing women's rights until his death in 1975.

A lifelong "dress reformer", she wore trousers under short dresses and eventually switched to trousers and jackets. She was frequently arrested for her choice.

"I don't wear men's clothes, I wear my own clothes," she said.
