as I think it through, the most common argument tends to be "well, you can't prove that humans think when generating language either, so you can't say that this isn't thinking," which... idk. it's frustrating as fuck to deal with.

unfortunately, I think that your "no one" depends upon a fairly narrow definition of "inside" - this is a very common line of argument from AI advocates in forums like LinkedIn, including people who appear to be part of the AI industry.

this feels very... German, somehow

my dad went to West Germany for business frequently starting in the mid-/late-70s, and the Toblerone, Haribo Gummi bears, and Playmobil that he bought back were basically our bribes for compliance. Oh! and Nutella!

how dare you

It wasn't my wife, but I can't remember who was on the receiving end. My mom's face blanched, but my folks kept their cool in the ensuing toddler meltdown/relieved laughter of the rest of the table that everything was okay.

Fortunately a) we hated that china, which had been gifted to us, and b) I had made a shitload more squash, and c) I escaped with a couple of minor blisters and some scalding.

sending the pyrex spinning.

It landed, upside down, on the kitchen island. It didn't shatter, but it sliced neatly through a stack of real china serving dishes that I had staged nearby. 🫠🫠🫠

I made a ton of veggie-sausage-and-cornbread-stuffed acorn squash for the main course. I was pulling one of the pyrex baking dishes from the oven, and, unbeknownst to me, there was water on one of my oven mitts.

The steam jetted into the mitt, and I reflexively jerked away...

Most of our friends were queer activists alienated from their families, so we went all out on a vegetarian spread.

😂😂😂

same in my family; my grandfather stayed conspicuously silent, unless my grandmother did something so outrageous that no one could ignore, like the year she reversed the sugar and salt measurements for her pie.

Definitely Ein.

it was kind of a relief when she mostly lost her vision, because she'd still complain that nothing was as good as hers - but at least she had to stop inflicting it upon us.

as for pies... she didn't have a single recipe that she followed. she was Ahab to her white whale, the perfect blueberry pie - which meant you never knew what she would bring or how edible it was.

but her pies were the best, and she wouldn't hear otherwise.

her stuffing was bland and underseasoned, and it would infuriate her that my mom (who always hosted) wouldn't make the 'right' dressing, and would frequently try new recipes.

so my grandmother always (always!) brought a second tray of her stuffing.

my paternal grandmother was, uh... particular about Thanksgiving.

she was also probably Borderline Personality Disorder, so... 🫠

but she made the best dressing and pies and would not hear otherwise.

except...

it's some serious troll energy, for sure. 90 replies in your first 6 hours, all vaguely sea-lion-flavored? fuck that.

TIL. Thanks!

because "technology" doesn't have the same aura as "science." it's an appeal to appropriated authority of sorts.

it's not necessarily the cities, it's the states. Seattle provides full-day kindergarten but Washington only mandates and pays for half-day, leaving parents and local taxpayers to cover the balance. and forget preschool or childcare funding, you're entirely on your own there.
