Makes a lot of sense in a day in age when people are fearing the army being turned on citizens more and more.
This is also too when Batman is being written more as a social worker who often buts heads with more and more power tripping dirty cops.

Case in point both the newest runs Action Comics & Captain America tell updated origin stories for their respective hero. Where in both tell a prominent General (Lane/Ross) that they refuse to use their powers as part of the military industrial complex.

Remember when you would get a show on VHS and they would sometimes make a big picture.

A wise man once said, bored fans stop reading but angry fans don't. And its really really hard not to see that kind of ideology steering the creative choices on the mainline Spider-Man for the last couple decades.
