Draft text of my forthcoming book review in the journal Mediaevistik: "The introduction of gunpowder technology into late medieval Europe brought new forms of violence as well as indirect transformations in military strategy, urban fortification designs, and even different types of wounds that physicians struggled to understand and treat. In addition, it generated a host of new texts on technical subjects that made their way into manuscript and eventually printed book culture. This volume by Axel Müller presents a critical edition and English translation of one of the most popular texts from this genre, the so-called “Firework Book” explaining how to prepare, preserve, and utilize different types of gunpowder. The edition is based on a 15th-century manuscript in New High German that currently resides in the Royal Armouries collection at Leeds, and it includes a transcription and translation of the entire text, along with commentary and analysis. The first question this volume has to address concerns the very nature of the text. Unlike other medieval works of literature or natural philosophy where one might hope to arrive at, or at least approximate, a primary urtext based on a genealogy of surviving manuscript copies, the Firework Book in its surviving incarnations is not a single original work with modifications and commentary so much as a genre of literature with no clearly identifiable author or foundational text. Müller’s introduction does a fine job of surveying what can be learned from the variety of early manuscripts, including the largely mythical origin stories contained within them, as well as the Firework Book’s place within the broader literary landscape of writings on gunnery, fencing, military training, war chronicles, and other bellicose subjects. Versions of this text first appeared during the early 15th century, when other German-language practical manuals in topics like field medicine and apothecary recipes were similarly emerging." "The manuscript used for this edition includes two parts in slightly different hands, with the first part characteristic of core materials in the Firework Book genre, while the second part delves more widely into incendiary devices other than cannons, such as fire arrows and other flammable projectiles, and is linked to a set of illustrations at the end of the manuscript. For the main part of the volume, the 200+ pages of transcription and translation of the Leeds manuscript are cleanly laid out on facing pages, and indeed the straightforward artisan’s language permits nearly line-by-line matching of the original phrasing, with ample discussion of translation choices in the footnotes for each page. After a brief introductory statement on how important it is for nobles to have competent defenders and skilled master gunners if they “fear that they may be besieged by their enemies and threatened in their castles, strongholds, or towns,” the text begins with a series of questions whose form could easily be seen as an extension of late medieval disquisitions on physics, even as the particulars explore novel subjects and ingredients. There are discussions of whether the projectile from a cannon is driven directly by fire or by the vapor coming from a gunpowder explosion, whether a projectile will travel farther if it fits more tightly into the barrel, and how the antagonistic cold and hot properties of saltpeter and sulphur produce the force that propels these projectiles. " "The ordering of gunpowder recipes within the main text can seem rather haphazard, for example with multiple sets of instructions for making “the best” powder. Yet the details within them offer a range of illuminating glimpses into late medieval craft culture, from the types of ingredients available for purchase through apothecary shops, to thoughts on harvesting and using different types of wood, to pungent instructions on whether urine for a particular recipe should be aged for several days or come from someone who drinks wine, to comparisons with the legends of Alexander using Greek fire in antiquity and the “necromancer and alchemist” said to have first discovered the method of firing guns. Together these narrative details illustrate the links between different realms of practical knowledge in the medieval era, alongside the efforts of practitioners of one branch of semi-secret learning to present their trade as having special value and connection to the nobility. Müller’s book concludes with a nuanced analysis of the structure and terminology of the Firework Book and then a useful list of known manuscript copies of this text for anyone who might wish to compare the transcribed text with other examples from the genre. While it might be easy to pigeonhole this volume as mostly a curiosity of late medieval military history, in the editor’s hands it becomes a much broader window into both the practical features and the self-representational rhetoric of artisanship and craft culture during this period. Historians of medieval physics, technology, alchemy, recipe collections, and even book and manuscript history are likely to find much to interest them."
