History is not something that can be tied up neatly into a package with perfectly mitred corners. Instead it looks more like a young relative's attempts to wrap a strangely shaped and possibly concerning birthday present. 8/
We were treated to a brilliant talk by @cathamclarke.bsky.social at CCCU yesterday: poetry, history, time-travel. It is so good to be reminded of the great scholarship still happening in spite of the absolute shambles of HE at the moment.

Now, Ordnance Survey bingo and castle landscapes 1/

I have had a very Norman day today. This morning CCCU hosted and I chaired a round table involving a delegation of tourism people and heritage professionals from Normandy and partners in Kent. This afternoon, teaching third years about the Norman church.

This evening, M.R. James ghost stories!

I really struggled with finding words in my teaching today. I even forgot the word 'castle' in a module on ... castles.

Wonkhe should be ashamed of publishing this propaganda bullshit. Apart from the hallucinations and built-in biases, how is AI remotely ‘ethical’ when operating it burns enormous amounts of power, requires enormous volumes of water and emits thousands of tonnes of CO2 often in minority communities?
NEW on Wonkhe: A new partnership between Advance HE, evasys and Student Voice AI is giving rapid access to a goldmine of insight about the PGT experience. Helena Lim explains buff.ly/bnSjmUh

A moment, please, to consider the absolute majesty of Daphne Oram's unbelievable score to this. A pitch shifted, time stretched, frequency agile glimpse of the future of music production; a liberty-taking all analogue remix of Sandy Nelson's Teen Beat realised in real time with the visuals.

'The science select committee should recognise that its remit covers all of research, and conduct an inquiry into the Library, with a view to helping it recover. It could quantify the funding that is needed to properly rebuild the Library’s digital infrastructure'.
I’ve written a piece on the curious lack of media and political interest in the issues faced by our national @britishlibrary.bsky.social. This is strange given we live in a world where ideas, knowledge and research are a long-term source of innovation and insight

The British library is in crisis: why does nobody care?
The widespread indifference to the British Library's crippling cyberattack demonstrates a perilous failure to value the knowledge infrastructure vital for national prosperity

This explains why British Library staff are on strike

The union says - managers take home up to £170k with £15k bonuses, while staff offered below-inflation pay rise

Meanwhile, frontline staff take abuse for the massive data breach - which managers failed to foresee
