I’m not sure there is somebody I have found more professionally inspiring. He grew in the same eclectic backwaters that I did. I am so relieved that I was able to meet him, and that it was exactly the kind of surreal, beautiful, strange, wonderful experience I had hoped for.

people understandably want to assign heavy values of goodness and kindness to people whose art they love—because isn't the art an extension of the artist, etc etc? but the deification of people who are, at the end of the day, human beings with warts of varying degrees, is only hurtful to oneself.

I don't understand these people, somebody being a skilled or celebrated person is exactly how they are able to escape accountability and keep perpetuating abuse. even if one is so-so on their work (I haven't been a huge fan of his), we can't let personal opinions get in the way of that.
