I personally wouldn't class Stardew Valley as a work simulator but even its lightweight farming stuff was enough to have her roll her eyes in disbelief

My GF, not a big gamer herself, literally can not believe there are games that just simulate doings some job

Battle Royale is just a rip off of the Running Man after all....

To be fair it doesn't read like he's making the Cleese argument that "you could never make this today". Sounds more like he's aware some of it hasn't aged well and its better left off the TV than broadcast with a warning. Though I heartily agree with everything you're saying

The man who, shot-for-shot, has ripped-off countless movies it complaining about people ripping-off others?

pan-Mediterranean would probably have been better on reflection. Not a lot of railways in the med mind.

Yeah I struggled to come up with a good pithy terminology that would allow the railway comparison to work tbh.

As a fun aside; the Roman corn-dole eventually became the largest, pan-european infrastructure project the European continent had ever seen. And it wouldn't be rivalled in scale until the advent of the railway.

I enjoy the notion that the Roman empire was not some manner of State and they did not have state welfare like their Corn Dole.
November 28, 2025 at 11:24 AM
Also, what is the Roman empire if it is not some form of state? (though I accept it does not take the form of the contemporary Nation State)
November 28, 2025 at 11:23 AM
The Romans had actual corn laws that distributed subsidised (and eventually) free corn as state welfare. Important parts of Roman history hinge on this and we still use the phrase "bread and circuses" which is a direct reference to this state welfare

What is the killer app that will take it to this many subs? I think the last estimate I saw was that every sub would need to be spending $100 per month. Do any users really think it is 5x or 10x more valuable than their Netflix sub?

MPs should probably be barred from working privately in fields the held portfolio over for 10 years after being an mp. And all sorts more.

A wealth tax is a necessary but not sufficient step in the direction of stopping people with money having undue influence in the public sphere. A complete overhaul of party donations, banning closed door lobbying, prevent folk like Rowling use the courts as a weapon and lots more are probably needed
