The current discussion on Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, current owner of LA times, feels so surface level. I’m aching for the investigative journalism on his history and where his money lies. He’s got investments in biotech/cancer medicine, that it’s so telling that he’s excited about RFK Jr.’s position.

Really thankful to all of the scientists who made themselves available to talk to me about the unprecedented situation at NIH.

I've never had so many people reach out to me for a story like this.

Fitting that the NIH’s year end list of basic research highlights contains very little actual basic research www.nih.gov/news-events/...
2024 NIH Research Highlights - Basic Research Insights
Noteworthy NIH advances in basic research include insights into the H5N1 avian influenza outbreak, mapping how cancers form and spread, and progress in understanding the brain.

Esquire talked to me a few months ago about the struggle of discovering music and expanding your tastes in your thirties. For obvious reasons I have my qualms with calling this a "middle-aged music crisis" (lol we're not THAT old), but this is an excellent piece. www.esquire.com/entertainmen...
My Middle-Aged Music Crisis
Studies have found that music discovery stops in our early thirties. At thirty-two, could I avoid becoming a washed music listener?

In 1997, a typical CD retailed for $16.99, which is $33.42 in 2024 dollars.

In 2024, you can subscribe to Spotify Premium for $11.99/month—$6.10 in 1997 dollars—and get access to every new release and a huge back catalog.

This is why your favorite indie artist doesn't make any money on publishing.

Somehow @ckharyn.bsky.social and I were able to make it to two different shows last night. Granted they were only minutes away from each other, and we only saw partial sets of both headliners. But we at least saw 2/3 of both sets!

But we persist… and we make sure we come back home before midnight.
The number of times @bryochemist.bsky.social and I have just been chilling at home, practically ready for bed, completely forgetting we have a late show to go to… is too many to count. I age decades between buying Fonda/Roxy/Zebulon tickets and going to the actual show.
