Politics, yes. But also film, theatre, music etc.

'Every night she'd come to me
I'd cook for her, I'd pour her tea
She was in her thirties then
had made some money, lived with men
We'd lay us down to give and get
beneath the white mosquito net
And since no counting had begun
we lived a thousand years in one'

Mike Hodges’ last film.

Worth seeing for its sense of people and places, especially round SW9 where I used to live.

Or for a more eloquent description:

"Does the film work? All I know is that it stays in my mind for its ambitiously autumnal essence.’ (Andrew Sarris)

Enjoyed Blunt: The Fourth Man.

Ian Richardson: Blunt
Anthony Hopkins: Burgess

Back in the old days when treacherous English ‘gentlemen‘ were selling out the country to the Russians. 🙂

Let Me Down Easy is song title used by various artists. Different songs. Different artists.

This one was written by Cy Coleman, (who wrote The Best is Yet To Come) with lyrics by Carolyn Leigh.

It was written for a musical version of a Neil Simon play, The Heartbreak Kid, which was never made.

Hello from the Humber.

The ‘bridge to nowhere’ it was called initially and maybe still is

I liked Pauline Collins and John Alderton in Upstairs Downstairs when I was a kid. The family used to watch No Honestly too. Alderton was a local boy (Hull) who made good. My mum loved this couple

Expensive watching Rebecca Miller documentary on Scorsese.

Because I’ve had to buy this film he made, those films he liked, World Cinema Project box sets et al.

Sometimes the question of who‘s the greatest (American) director comes up. But a tough case not to choose Mr Scorsese

Claire Martin and Rob Barron at the Crazy Coqs tonight.

"If there is jazz royalty in Britain, Claire Martin is definitely ermine clad" -says UK Jazz News. And I have long agreed.

Anyone watching the Mr Scorsese doc?

Some great stuff in there. Isabella Rossellini was wise, truthful and gave some interesting digs (in a warm way). Class.

The doc could have been this and it could have been that, but taking it for what it is, it's a good watch.

Loving the documentary on Scorsese. And I’ve already made a note of about 20 non-Scorsese films I need to see or see again and I’m only 40 minutes in.

This is one of the great things about Scorsese: he inspires love not just of his own movies but cinema as a whole.

I’ve mentioned this before (but that’s ok because I like to mindlessly repeat myself): this was the best gig of my youth.

I was 16 and there was a joy and style to this gig I hadn’t experienced before.

The place was dancing.

I miss him. Of course I didn't know him. But what I miss is 'what would Gil have said about these days? What would he have sung?'

I miss his voice. I miss his anger. I miss his righteousness. His morality. I miss the beauty of the man.

Tell me when Gil is playing and I'll come back to America.
