On the Late Debate on RTÉ radio one just now Senator Dee Ryan said the Foynes Road project is higher priority than connecting Shannon Airport to the rail network.

I'd be interested in hearing a credible approach to reducing emissions without reducing fossil fuels. Maybe she means that she's going to focus on agricultural methane and methane from drained peat bogs.

It was recently updated.

Those are just the consultation drawings but there's a note that the junction should be designed in accordance with the Cycle Design Manual. So long as that's done I don't see what the issue is.

Thank you! 🙏

I found the drawings. I'm pretty sure this is the type of junction that the cyclist that was interviewed is not happy with. This design is not appealing to sport cyclists but it is fundamentally safer. It really is disingenuous of the cyclist to characterise this as giving priority to cars.

I haven't seen the design. Can you point me to it?
November 20, 2025 at 9:36 PM
That is a possibility. I'd have to see the design myself though. The prioritising cars at junctions point is often made by that subset of cyclists I referred to earlier. It is usually misleading and a reason to rubbish a scheme, when in fact it's following Dutch cycle design principles.

There's a subset of cyclists who tend not to want bike lanes. They tend to be faster, sport cyclists, rather than children, elderly, etc and are happy to mix it with vehicles or cycle in a hard shoulder. Bike lanes are for making cycling attractive to people who aren't as confident / skilled as them

This was safer? I doubt that very much.

Some councillors are giving Mayor Moran a hard time over the purchase of the land. I shouldn't need to point out that the Mayor used his own discretionary funds to purchase it. It isn't really anything to do with them. Having said that, the zoning of it will be.
