It is absolutely the department‘s fault if it is not being clear with contingent faculty — PhD students and otherwise — that anything that seems like political bait should be brought to the department level

No one who is a PhD student should be adjudicating this sort of thing

AMC (which I think are only in the US?) are the worst offender in my experience.

I've only been to Landmark and Cineplex theaters in Canada so far, and they aren't quite as bad (though Cineplex is close).

The film not starting until 20-30 minutes after the posted time isn't helping either.

We have this cycle over and over of people panicking over the assumption that Trump can reshape the global order when the more likely trigger for global crisis is Trump generating disorder in America that collapses the US.

Europe needs to prepare for a post-American world.

It definitely hinges on the ability to give/receive criticism and manage differences of opinion while maintaining respect for the knowledge/skills/perspectives of others. And I realize “respect” is another slippery term…but I think it is distinct from “civility”.

This is a good question and if I’m being honest I don’t have a good general definition that doesn’t easily reduce to “don’t be a dick”. Maybe I need to think about it some more.

FWIW, among the places I have lived, I saw the most people open carrying in Tucson, and I heard the most gunfire in Durham.

But it was in Atlanta where I felt the most persistent threat of incidental conflict escalating into something violent. Some weird confluence of honor culture and road rage.
