US survey of construction data: Multifamily housing construction takes longer than it used to—up to 10 months longer on average, compared to several decades ago. Single-family homes take about the same time to be completed.

Liberals need a theory of how we build law enforcement agencies that are broadly reflective of society and not a home to right wing reactionaries.

Immigrants are leaving the US workforce in very large numbers.

Remittance payments US→MX plummeting, down 2+ million from a year ago.

Biggest decline in >30 years - a period that includes a homebuilding depression and a 100-year financial crisis.

The fact that California- the 4th largest economy on Earth whose geography is truly heavenly- is building less housing than the South- an area with half the per capita wealth and enough humidity to make you mad- is a fucking travesty. And it's entirely a policy choice. And we can choose differently.

Went to a park in Bellevue today with the kids and the grass was amazing. Green. Level. 10/10 would read a deep dive on why Seattle parks have bumpy brown fields and Bellevue has turf you could play an MLS game on.

The Cold War was a political fight over how the world should industrialize. The current political fight is what to do with the economic surplus provided by industrialization.

Everything about this story illustrates how city planning is broken in much of the United States of America.
charlottesville spent most of a decade revising its zoning code. it held endless community meetings and gave opponents ample opportunity to make their case. they lost. but a handful of rich homeowners sued and have gotten the new code overturned on a technicality.

The Cold War was described as a political battle over how the world should industrialize (state directed v capitalism). Now we have a political battle over the information age. Not a new Cold War. But end of history has given way to a fight over modernity.

Two good things 2 of 2
Washington state house just concurred with state senate’s version of TOD bill, passing it out of the legislature and on to governor.

Arguably the most substantial state TOD law ever introduced in the US, including a large-scale upzoning & massive reduction in parking requirements.

In Seattle, Habitat for Humanity replaced a single-family home with the 17 condos.

The Olympic Ridge project was made possible by a trifecta of regulatory that doesn't exist in most of the U.S. - Seattle's unique single-stair building code, no parking requirement, and mid-rise zoning
