One of my professors pointed out that one of the hallmarks of dictatorship is that portraits of the leader are inescapable

I first learned about Evacuation Day from an essay by James Thurber, which I read in high school. It’s been a long time since I read it, but I remember he wrote about how it used to be a big holiday in New York City.
