The way this is being reported is extremely irresponsible.

There is a hole in the containment structure, about 10 feet across. No other damage is reported. That hole can allow some of the dusty radioactive material to escape.

That is what "can no longer do its job of containment" means.

I was an engineer on a surface ship during my time in the Navy, and it was still very disconcerting spending time below the waterline for any extended period. Unlike my nuke buddy who was stationed on an attack sub, at least I could take a break and come up to a catwalk for a look at the sea and sky

I mean, it's unencrypted data being transmitted over publicly accessible VHF frequencies. They shouldn't be getting legal threats for accidentally relaying something like hotel info. It's not like they were intercepting private phone calls or something. I guess it's a fine line...
